I was wondering if anyone knew the Latin text used when placing ashes on someones forehead? The reason I ask is because if you go to Mass in English on Ash Wednesday they say Genesis 3:19 “Remember that dust you are, and to dust you shall return” but in Spanish it’s a translation of “Repent and believe in the Gospel”?

I do not know the Latin, sorry. But I know that at my parish we used both those phrases in previous years. My guess is that there are several options of what to say?

Yes, both of those formula are used in English as well, but the former is much more frequent in my experience. The Latin from which they are derived are:

Memento, homo, quia pulvis es, et in pulverem reverteris.
and
Paenitemini, et credite Evangelio.

Yes, the latter is plural – It is from Mark 1:15.

I was in the sanctuary serving as reader this evening and I was able to overhear my pastor as he administered ashes. Interestingly, he was alternating the two admonitions. I guess the familiar “Remember, man …” can get a little tongue-tying when repeated over and over again. 😛

Seems we had a breakdown in communication for our Mass last night. No lector, no ushers, no one (other than the priest and deacon) to administer ashes. So our pastor asked if some people would come forward to administer the ashes. One young man (senior in HS probably) got up to get a friend to be an usher with him later. Father saw him and said, “You come on over here too.”

The young man blushed and, after receiving ashes himself, began to administer them. Being at the piano next to the alter, I was the first person he came to. Flustered, he put the ashes on my head and said, “Be faithful to your sin and turn away from the Gospel.” Oops. :rotfl: I was hoping this Lent would be the start of something new in my life, not just a reliving of my past!

Please don’t follow his advice!🙂

With God’s grace I intend to follow what he meant to say, rather than the actual words that came out of his mouth. God bless this young man who stepped forward when called. 🙂

I confess, it was me, the ashes were very dry and flaky, and I was standing in the back (getting those lined up around the block outside) and I am only 5’3" so most of the people were taller than me so I could not keep looking down. I guess my thumb came up with a real load and I sprayed ashes all over some poor ladies face, God bless her, she was real nice about it.
