Ashes again...

Quick question: I went to an Ash Wednesday mass this morning, but didn’t go to communion (maybe scrupulous; the mass was shorter than I had expected and an hour hadn’t passed since I had flossed my teeth)… anyway, i decided to go to a mass again in the evening and take communion there, sicne I am not working today anyway.

Is it ok to take ashes again then? I would love to do it all in one mass again. I did alread take ahses in the morning though. That was in my own parish. I will probably go to a different parish in the evening, but I think that doesn’t matter so much.

Yes, you can receive ashes again.

It’s the scrupulosity bothering you. Talk to your priest and he can help you to become fee of it. It’s weighing you down.
 
There is no rubric concerning the receiving of the ashes.

And, FWIW, dental floss isn’t food. You don’t break the Eucharistic fast in this way.

I think the OP was fretting that she had dislodged some particles of food from between her teeth and so has broken the fast.

OP, it’s the same point if you had absent-mindedly chewed some skin off a hangnail. ‘Food’ is what can be offered to somebody else to eat, it isn’t random things that are in your own mouth and can be swallowed.

Next time your scruples make you think you can’t receive Holy Communion because of fears that you have broken the fast, just ask yourself, ‘Is this something I could offer to someone else to eat? No? Then it isn’t food’.

Either that or the OP makes a habit of flossing immediately after he eats and counts that as the start time between eating and receiving communion. Flossing isn’t eating per se but it’s a good habit nonetheless. What’s it take, perhaps a couple of minutes?

When I floss, it takes me close to 30 minutes, but that is because the floss gets stuck between my teeth, and will generally break off (the floss) and then I get all mad and need to make a mental note of that for my next confession.

I suggest getting one of those inexpensive battery-operated waterpik flossers. You can even carry it with you. Hand flossing can take a lot of time, especially if you have bridgework done.

My parish priest does know about my scrupulosity. He has helped me a lot already. Just in recent times we have talked a lot. Right now I decided I really must work on NOT asking about every little thing anymore.

To those who asked about the flossing… well, it was even more minimal than that. I had the feeling I MAY have something between two teeth where ofen something gets lodged… and just flossed there… maybe there was nothing even these. Still I looked at the time and thought, well, communion will be after that… but then it wasn’t.

I do often make a point of rinsing out my mouth and washing it an hour ebfore communion.,… since I usually go to evening mass during the week, that can become a bit of a stress, and I do wonder if that is exaggerated after all and yes, if I get a chance maybe I should talk to my priest about that… but for right now I want to give him abreak from me ;))) he has been helping me so much recently. I also asked my own parish prist this time about fasting, since I have some health concerns, so I took of his time there too… he is so generous and helpful but I am aware that I am not the only one in his parish 😉 😉 😉 so I don’t want to come every day with new questions.
No, need to be braver now and rely on God’s love and mercy especially for such small things. 🙂

Oh, and I did go communion at night and received ashes again and it felt totally ok. 🙂 Didn’t worry about it anymore.

Please don’t be scrupulous. You can take Communion although you’d scrubbed or flossed your teeth less than an hour previously.

Of course you can get the ashes again. It’s just Communion which can’t be received at the same type of Mass on the same day. You can take Communion twice if the Masses are different. For example on a Saturday morning you could attend a wedding or funeral Mass and receive Communion then attend a vigil Mass later that day and receive the Sacrament again.

Hm, here I actually thought it was different. That it didn’t matter whether the mass was different or not, just the second time HAS to be while attending a mass.

You’re right.
It does not have to be 2 different kinds of Masses (like 1 funeral and 1 wedding) or different Mass texts.
