Hi. I came across your website quite by accident. I was searching for the answer to a specific question that has peaked my curiosity for some time now. Following the death of my eldest nephew on Thursday of last week and watching his “memorial services” unravel, I knew it was time I found the answer to my question so I’m glad I came across your website. His “memorial services” included practices relative to that “haunting” question I’ve carried for awhile now. My husband who is a devout Catholic didn’t know the response. Hopefully, one of your staff will.

The answer is very simple. Most Dioceses require Catholics to bury the ashes of cremated Catholics in Consecrated Ground, i.e. a Catholic Cemetary.
I would check with the Pastor of your Church about this.
One good thing is that it costs less to inter cremains that it does a body and casket.
Your major cost will be the cemetary plot and the tombstone or plaque.

I am sorry to hear about your loss. Is your question relating to ashes after cremation? Could you give us more direction with your question?

Ashes must be interred. They may not be scattered nor kept by relatives.

I believe that one reason that the ashes must be interred after cremation is so that there will be a place for relatives and friends to visit and remember the deceased. If the ashes are scattered or kept by one (or more) relatives, there is no opportune place to come. Similarly, there should be some sort of memorial service, since again it gives people a chance to mourn and move towards closure.
