Ashes on ash Wedensday

I have seen a video, of the holy father placing ashes ontop of peoples head, instead of the forhead, which I know… so now I am confused… anyone that could explain to me?

It’s just a tradition which varies from country to country.

In Italy, the custom is to put them on the top of the head; in some other places the custom is the forehead.

I saw a news report that said that the Pope ‘recommended’ that ashes be given out by ashes being placed on top of people’s heads as this was a more traditional interpretation of texts. All the priests in our diocese changed to this way (although a few parishoners were not happy with the change). I don’t know if the old way with making a cross on the forehead is no longer allowed or invalid??

On Ash Wednesday, the priest can mark the cross on your forehead with ashes, or he can sprinkle ashes on top of your head. Both ways are valid. It all depends on where (which parish or which country) you get your ashes.

Remember, the ashes are a sacramental…just as with the Rosary, there are different ways of doing it. There isn’t a valid or invalid way.

Well, I guess if the priest wanted to do in a way that isn’t based on tradition and precedent… somewhere other than on the forehead or top of the head.
