Ashes on our foreheads - too public?

Hello, I just joined and have a question about today, Ash Wednesday. In the bible, we are told not to be so public about our penitence, yet we are showing our penitence by receiving ashes. Isn’t there a scripture in the New Testament which tells us to put a sign on ourselves? If so, does anyone know which one it is? Thanks so much
