Ashes

“You are dust and to dust you shall return” is said
When ashes are placed as a cross on my head.

It is a reminder of humility, sacrifice, and penance
Which we undergo at our Ash Wednesday observance.

Humility as in the big picture we are dust in our insignificance.
When compared to God’s awesomeness in His magnificence.

Sacrifice in true love for others is our sincerest call,
Just as Jesus died on the cross for the salvation of all.

Penance for our sins helps us as sin burdens us with great tolls;
The penance improves our lives and cleanses our wounded souls.

Lent is a time to work on making ourselves better persons,
Enhancing our good virtues and working on reducing our sins,

Lent is a time we share in the suffering of our savior Jesus,
Who suffered so much just to redeem each and every one of us.

Thanks for the poem. It is helping me get ready for Lent. I have been so busy, working and going to school, that I haven’t really prepared myself for this holy season.

Thank you so much for posting your poem. I may refer to it several times during lent.👍
