I just wanted to give everyone the opportuninty to ask a former Mormon, who converted to the Catholic Faith, any questions that they might have regarding the Mormon church (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints). I will not answer to those who are wanting to Mormon bash. Please keep your questions in the Spirit of Christ.

Welcome to the Forums and welcome to the Church.

Welcome home! 🙂

What were a few of the key “Aha!” moments in your journey that led you away from Mormonism and towards Catholicism? Thanks.

It’s a mormon teaching that God was once a man, was this something that -every- mormon knows, or is it something that’s not discoursed in public anymore?

Hi, could you perhaps, explain clearly how the Mormon concept of the Trinity differs from that of the Catholic/Orthodox/mainline protestant churches?

have you read Isaiah Bennett’s books and what do you think of them?

At one point did you realize the idea of “becoming a God” was no where in the Bible, and therefore it seemed meaningless to “consider the Bible canon” to whatever small extent Mormons do?

Welcome home brother. I have a question about Heaven and Hell. What is the belief of the existence of Hell and how many levels are there in Heaven?

Well, I would say that I really began to take a really close look of how Christ Church was established here on earth in regards to the order of things. The thing that I took a long hard look at was the Priesthood. In the Mormon church all worthy men of the church are welcomed into the Priesthood with Christ being the head of that Priesthood. Not really a bad idea huh? I mean it really was a great feeling that I was actually a Priesthood holder blessing people and securing my place with Heavenly Father…I wanted to learn more about the beloved Priesthood and began really to get in deeper and deeper into how the Priesthood was actually ordered and who it was established with. After learning the fundamentals of it from the Scriptures I began to see that the “falling away” as described in Mormon doctrine really could not have occurred (Mormon teachingis that the Priesthood was removed from the earth around the Dark Ages by God because he was angry with the human race)…Jesus said, “the Gates of Hell shall not prevail against” the rock (the established Priesthood)…So, I learned that my Priesthood was false. After that I wanted to know what religion has the true Priesthood. I learned that the Catholic Church has the true Priesthood of God. There is more to my conversion story, but that was really one of my aha moments…God Bless

Hello and God Bless,

Yes, this is something that is taught to every age level within the Mormon Church…It is not really taught by the missionary in the field as it may scare off potential converts. After you become a member you learn this and many other things in a special converts class called Gospel Principles.

Thanks for your question:)

In the Mormon Church it is believed that the Holy Trinity consist of three seperate divine beings: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost…This teaching is quite simplified to the average Mormon that God could not be in three seperate places at any given time. One explanation that is given is that God could not be on the Cross and in heaven at the same time…It seems that this is really over simplified to the Mormons…They even say that the Holy Trinity is not such a mystery…That God has revealled this all to his latter day prophets.

No, I have not read any of the books by the author that you have mentioned…Thanks for the suggested reading…I will check them out.

I would have to say that the Mormons never really claimed that the teaching of becoming a God was in the Holy Bible…It has always been claimed to have come from modern day prophets. The Holy Bible is actually used frequently in Mormon teaching just not as you or I would use it. In the LDS Church the Bible is believed to have many flaws as it has been touched by man and rewritten several times. They claim that the Book of Mormon is as close as you will get to God’s word in this world. What they do not tell you is that the Book of Mormon has also been edited many times as well, and actually neither th Holy Bible or the Book of Mormon mention that a man can become a God…All of this teaching is found in what is called the Doctine and Covenants (most of which was written by Joseph Smith).

In the Mormon Church it is believed that there is Purgetory, Hell, and Heaven. The belief is that Hell is a dark, cold, and loathsome place seperate from your Heavenly Father and brothers and sisters…It is also taught that it is the traditional belief of fire and brimstone…So maybe there are two hells?

Heaven is thought to have three levels and the levels are as follows: the Telestial, Terrestial, and the Celestial. The belief is that all of these are in heaven, but the people whenever they reach one of these levels will not know the difference between each one until they progress to the next one…The ultimate goal is to reach the Celestial Kingdom where you can remained married to your spouse on earth and create more children to inhabit other worlds that your Heavenly Father has created. In other words, the creative process is repeated over and over through you for these other worlds.

Wild huh??🙂

Hi Monte!

Thanks for offering your insight…here’s my question:

Would you feel comfortable voting for a Mormon for president of the US?

I have a couple:

I’ve heard that if a Mormon couple are married and have Mormon kids, doesn’t the LDS teach that in the afterlife they can rule their own universe full of Mormon spirit-children? I do know that they teach that “As God is, Man can become”.

Why did Mormons practice polygamy?

I’ve heard (from a questionable source mind) that the LDS teaches that black people are descended from fallen angels? Is/was that a Mormon belief?

Lastly, why are members of the LDS church called “Mormons”?

You have perfect timing, I must say. I joined this forum just to see if there were folks like you around who I could ask questions!

Recently I’ve been visited by several Mormon missionaries, and had some rather lively conversations. Yesterday, my girlfriend, housemate and I squared off against five Mormon missionaries and had a fairly wonderful conversation until the very end, when things started to get a bit more heated, though remained charitable in content.

One of the claims they have consistently made is that the Sacrament of Baptism has been changed in such a way that violates the moral immutability of God. Another is that the Papacy ended with Peter. One of the Elders who visited us yesterday, for example, claimed that there was 1) no evidence that Linus succeeded Peter, or that anyone did and 2) that if anyone should’ve succeeded him it should’ve been John.

I responded with the fact that Peter was installed to a position which is hereditary in the Davidic Kingdom, that the Steward of the House of the King was a position which was passed down for as long as was required before the King’s return to the house, and that they Keys were the most important representation of that authority, the ability to open or close the house to those without. I also responded that John himself never objected to the Bishop of Rome exercising his teaching authority, as in the case of Clement of Rome’s letters.

What I would like to ask you is several part. First, in your conversion, what books (if any) did you read that cleared up your understanding of the so-called Great Apostasy, such that you were able to accept the Church’s teaching and not the LDS teaching? I want to put together a reading list for these missionaries for when they finish their missions. I am also very interested in what readings or evidence convinced you of the Papacy. Second, in your conversion, did you encounter this baptism issue, and how did you resolve it? I myself can imagine quite a few responses to it, beginning with the hypocrisy of taking a passage about Jesus coming up out of the water in His Baptism and extrapolating that that requires a certain form of it, yet denying Christ’s explicit words, “Unless you eat of the Flesh of the Son of Man you shall not have life within you,” and continuing on to an argument that the only requirements we are given Baptism are that we be baptized in water and spirit, and that so long as these are present, the amount or form of the water is irrelevant, etc. But I would really love to know what argument works best from the Mormon perspective so as to prepare.

Thank you for your answers and any assistance you can provide. God Bless!

I would also be very interested in this answer. The Apostasy is the core of the Mormon Church’s claim to validity. No apostasy, no need for restoration. No restoration, no Mormonism.

I don’t want to discuss the idea of the Great Apostasy itself, but rather how you came to view it as a flawed doctrine.

Thanks!

First off sorry for the delay in response I was out of the country for a while:

In the LDS Church you have to be married in the LDS Temple to recieve the power to become a God after your mortal death. In other words this is not an automatic thing that occurs if you are Mormon. If you have been married in the temple your children automatically become “born into the covenant” made in the Temple. The child still has to to accept this and become baptized later to be a part of their heavenly family…Once both parents are dead and become immortal they are said to be able to procreate in heaven spirit children to inhabit the bodies of the new babies that are created on the earth.

Polygamy was mostly only allowed to members of the LDS Church who were able to support multiple wives…The reason that polymagy was allowed was due to the high death rates of males due to sickness or persecution…Polygamy helped to support the poor widows of the dead.

Black people are said to have come from Cain’s descendents…LDS folks believe that all of Cain’s descendents were cursed for the death of Able…Until the 1960’s it was ok for black people to become members but that the male members were not allowed to become Priesthood holders…In the late 1960’s many members cried foul and the LDS Prophet of that time was said to have had a revelation that allowed the black members, that were men, to become members of the Priesthood.

LDS folks are called Mormons because of the push of the Book of Mormon by the LDS missionaries in the beginnings of their church…

Hi Monte!

Really a good question and my answer is that I would not really base my vote on the religion of the man or woman who was trying to gain my vote. My vote is always based on morals and who gets closest to my beliefs…Would I vote for a Mormon? I believe that if the Mormon was a good moral choice based upon abortion (most Mormons believe abortion is immoral), same sex marriage (against Mormon belief), freedom of speech and religion, assisted suicide (against Mormon belief)…I could go on here, but I think you understand why I would vote yes…I don’t really think that a Mormon president would try and push really deep Mormon doctrines upon the Nation…🙂
