Q: My mother recently came back from New Orleans and brought me a voodoo doll for success and happiness. I … write down my hopes and wishes on it, things like: I want my kids to have healthy, happy lives, things which were not at all harmful or vain"…

“If you want to pray for your future children, use the rich traditions that the Church offers… And please, get rid of that doll and altar. I will pray that you do so, right away. God bless you!”

Such practices, the priest replies, “contradict the honor, respect, and loving fear that we owe to God alone.”

I’d call this one a no-brainer.
Please, dear Catholics, get rid of your voodoo dolls.

I’m not sure what baffles me more: that a Catholic from a developed, Western country (presumably) would actually use a “voodoo doll” rather than just chuckling and displaying it as a touristy item, or that said Catholic would feel a need to ask a priest if this was a harmful practice.

I’m afraid I must agree. Perhaps the OP might want to attend a few sessions of her local RCIA group, so that she can get some apparently much-needed refreshers on the Catholic faith.
