More likely that if you were close enough to use a sap, you would be in serious kimchi. Or kimchee, if you wish. Hand to hand combat works for extremely few.

And yes, it does seem a bit of an oxymoron, but no one said all laws make sense.

I don’t feel the fear to which you refer. And I highly doubt my safety is enhanced by owning a gun. I in fact feel that widespread availability and easy access to guns probably reduces my safety.

(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.) po18guy:
I will not get into the statistics of the number of times a gun is used to defend the innocent; my only comment is in your statement; "feelings’.

Feelings do not have a solid connection to logic; and I have many, many friends, all of them liberal, who are against guns because of “feelings”. And while I would gladly agree a number of them could not use a gun to defend themselves (e.g. one of my friends, now a retired kindergarten school teacher who went into a melt down at the thought of armed teachers), there are a significant number who not only can, but have defended themselves and others.

I don’t see this as reflective of mainstream Catholicism at all… can’t imagine it even occurring to people here in Canada. That photo represents American Conservatism pure and simple…there is nothing particularly Catholic about it from a cultural standpoint.

It’s like climate change and evolution…contentious subjects on CAF where American conservatism reigns supreme… but both non-issues in mainstream global Catholicism. At least I don’t think so… local culture will always play a role. I have no idea how these issues manifest in, say, African Catholicism.

Regarding bigotry towards gays…the Catechism specifically says that gay people should be treated with love and respect. The child abuse scandal was truly terrible, but I believe the Church is doing a much better job now to deal with these situations…and the sad terrible truth is we are just starting to realize that child abuse has been a rampant problem in society as a whole.

To be fair…Looking back, this photo does look more like a hunting scenario than a personal defence scenario, but I could be completely wrong.

You might want to stop assuming why people do what they do. Maybe actually listen to other people’s view. Instead of saying they have a right to their views but if there views don’t agree with your view then they don’t have/care about Jesus. You aren’t changing anyones views, just adding to the negativity on the question on guns.

Agree. I’m from the UK so it makes me really uncomfortable but at least I can pray that they need never be used on a human being

Guns are different then condoms. The Church has said people repeately that people have the right for self defence and just war. Also majority of legal gun owners never shoot anyone. Yet again you bring up people’s catholic faith being bad because of guns. I will state one more time please talk to people who have guns in real life, maybe go to a shooting range with them. Not so you become a gun advicate or anything but that you can understand where they are coming from.

Yes, I find the gin culture difficult to understand too. I guess what you are exposed to plays a large part in the opinions you have.

Really, look at what the Church teaches about the use of Condoms.

No for rhe “Non sequitur” you alledge that I made, read ( again listen to others instead of assuming) my previous post about blessing guns that they are used properly (law enforcement)

Now about me making red herrings. Where is the evidence that these guns were used to kill people? Nowhere. Where are you getting the evidence that guns are only used to kill people? In previous statements I said what guns can be used for. Then I stated that you should stop chastising people who don’t agree with you and actual talk to someone and listen. But instead of listening you accuse me of red herrings and some way misleading you.
Instead of using you emotion actually think about your statements and try to listen to others. I am done with this conversation, because you are refusing to listen to previous statements and are taking statements out of context to boaster your view.

Aren’t you read herring me? I never talked about nukes. I made my statements clear in previous post. In a perfect world Self defence would not be needed, we are not in a perfect world. The Church has a view of justified Self Defence and a just war (neither me or the Church say are wars are justified).
Now the reason I am asking you why guns are only used for killing humans. You keep saying stuff like "Why would a priest ever BLESS a device used to kill people " implying that you think that is the only use for them.(when in previous post I gave a list of things other than murder a firearm can be used for)

Doesn’t matter what I say you have made up your mind on my opinion. So you can argue with the strawman Lysander. If you want to know what the real Lysander thinks read the post in the thread, but I doubt you will.(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

Personally I’m a supporter of strict gun control so I don’t like this at all, I’d stop going to that church and find a new one if it was my parish

I pray that neither me nor anyone in my family is shot by some gun-wielding nutjob. 🙏 🙏 🙏
There is so much hate in this world.
There are so many mentally or emotionally disturbed people in this world.
And there are so many weapons that are so readily available.
The fear of being shot at any given time and at any given place is very real.

As a Marine I say “Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition…” 😎
It’s a late reply…but, my Mom told me about this song. When she was a little girl, during WWII air raid drills at school, the nuns would lead them in songs like this one. I still remember it after all these years.

Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition,
All aboard, we ain’t a-goin’ fishin’
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition and
We’ll all be free
We’ll all be free.

The Sky Pilot said it,
You’ve gotta give him credit,
For the son-of-a-gun-of-a-gunner was he, [she told me these were references to God & Jesus]
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition
And we’ll all be free.
We’ll all be free.

Can’t you buy meat?
Sure can. You can buy from a grocery store where the cow, pig, chicken or etc was killed and cut up at a slaughter house. You can buy a cow pig or chicken from a farmer who had it butchered or you take and get it done yourself or the third option you hunt and kill it yourself. Either way the animal is killed to get the meat. I would much rather hunt if I have the option. 😉

Food that is procured from hunting is generally healthier and it helps to control the population/heard size.

Peace is not established or maintained voluntarily. Look at it this way: Those who own guns are not nearly as thankful for those who do not as those who do not will be for those who do
I agree.

I grew up with firearms and was taught the proper use and care for them. I come from a military/law enforcement family, have a brother and cousin who are police officers. Those two and the rest of the males in my immediate and extended family are all Vets glfrom WW2 up to the current war n terror. Almost all of them are hunters.

I was a hunter for many years and owned firearms for many years. Unfortunately I made a poor choice in my life and now have a felony. I was wrong in what I did, and now have to live with that. I am really a good guy and law abiding citizen, other than that one crime. I was stupid. Wish I could change the past but I can’t, I can only accept it and move forward.

The thing that upsets me though is the loss of my 2nd Amendment right. I would understand if my crime had been a violent one, as in I assaulted or robbed someone. However, it wasn’t any of those types. I can no longer go to the range, I used to love doing that. I can no longer hunt with a rifle. I can’t defend my family or self if someone were to break into my home with a firearm with intentions of hurting my family or myself. I have to be careful about riding with anyone in my family because most of them carry. If your married your wife can’t even have a firearm in the home.

I think the federal laws need to change to allow fellons a process of getting their rights back. Several states allow this but it’s mute when the feds say no.

P.S., as it is National Law Enforcement Day, I want to thank you for your service to your community or state. 🙂

Appreciate it friend. It’s an absolute honor to be able to do what I do for a living.
