Once you are more accustomed to the older, traditional form, you will recognize the various gestures and signals that tell you where you are in the Mass. However, Mass is not a didactic follow-the-bouncing-ball sing-along, either. There are times when just being still, resting in the moment, are what we should and can do. If you don’t know what Father is doing precisely at moment X, that’s okay. You know what he is doing overall. You are on Calvary. You are in the Upper Room. You are at the Tomb.

You aren’t supposed to hear it all in the Latin Mass. The priest’s instructions are that certainly prayers are to be said in a very low voice.

Well, that’s true in the Ordinary Form too. There are parts of the Mass where the priest says prayers that we don’t hear too.

Obviously, we hear more in today’s Ordinary Form, but that’s also because of microphones.

Paraphrasing a blogger: It’s okay if you can’t hear the priest; he’s not talking to you.

As usual, he’s spot-on!

Bite your tongue… everyone knows they hear every prayer in the Ordinary Form. Who hasn’t heard:

“By the mystery of this water and wine …”

or

“With humble spirit and contrite heart …”

Oh wait… maybe not everyone hears those prayers. Heck sometimes I’m standing a foot or two away and still barely hear them even though I’m attuned to listen for them. 😉
