The St. Michael was written by Pope Leo XIII who had a frightening vision the battle between the Church and Satan. He wrote the prayer and ordered that it be added to the prayers Pius IX had commanded to be recited after Low Masses (Pius X added the three-fold invocation of the Sacred Heart), which continued until 1964.
One must ask: Does anyone think that Satan has stopped waging war on the Church? We still need to say prayers precisely like this. Is there a better time than when people are together in church?

Interesting. There is one parish where in the city I reside in that says the prayer after every Mass. They are the only one that I know of, and I live in a decent sized city.

A parish I used to belong to said the St. Michael prayer after every mass. Someone ( fundamental/traditionalist longing for the Latin Mass) complained to the local bishop about the propriety of the prayer and the bishop’s ruling was that the prayer could be said, but not included in the proper of the mass. The pastor then moved the recitation of the prayer to a position after the celebrant says “The Mass is Ended. Go in Peace.” That is the formal end of the mass and saying the prayer after that dismissal satisfied the bishop and the GIRM (General Instruction of the Roman Missal)

Saying the St. Michael prayer before the dismissal technically adds something to the Mass and that is not considered proper.

That is my understanding.

Shalom

I have also heard the prayer to St. Michael recited after masses at one parish followed by the prayer to St. Gertrude. Everyone just drops to their knees as the priest processes out, to pray.

I’ve been to at least two churches in the last couple years where the Prayer to St. Michael is said after Communion but before the final blessing. A third one is saying it as part of other devotions during the homily time.

The saying of the Prayer to St. Michael was actually one of the first things I noticed about the Mass when I resumed going a couple years ago. I knew the prayer from childhood but had never before heard it said at, or after, Mass.

It is said at the end of every mass at my wife’s old parish. I think it’s very wise and more churches should do it.

At one of the parishes I’ve attended, the St. Michael prayer is said at the end of mass. I forget if it’s before or after the final blessing.

For a while it had died out around here, but has made a strong comeback. Several parishes around here say it after every daily mass.

IMO, if people are going to claim to want Mass done exactly according to the rubrics, and complain about minor variations, this prayer should be said after the Mass is OVER. It is not part of the Mass. It’s a fine prayer to say, but not to interject where it is not called for.

It always is said after mass is over. Don’t worry about things that are not a problem

No it isn’t. See post #7. That is why I wrote what I did. But I’m not worried about it.

the st michael prayers were said just after"low mass", which is a reference to tridentine latin mass.

there is no “low mass” in the current vernacular liturgy.

There is a Quiet Mass though and there are parishes that say the Leonine prayers after that Mass.

I am guessing that these Masses were OF? I also have seen where the Hail Mary and/or the prayer to St. Michael were prayed as part of the Prayers of the Faithful which of course is during Mass. I have never heard them prayed during the EF, only after along with the Last Gospel

It isn’t done at our parish but I would like to see it at the end. My husband and I kneel and pray it together before we leave.

Yes they were all OF. The last EF I was at had the Rosary scheduled just before the Mass began, and the Rosary included the St. Michael prayer at the end.

One thing that was desired in the reform of the mass following V II was to remove all the prayers that had been added after mass:

Final Blessing (now moved to within the mass)
Last Gospel
Hail Mary
Hail Holy Queen
Prayer to St Michael
Prayer to Sacred Heart.

So the mass would be mass and prayers after mass would be understood to be NOT part of the mass.

At our parish, the rosary is said before mass
After mass, the chaplet of divine mercy.

BUT the priest enters after the rosary and leaves before the chaplet so all know these are NOT part of the mass.
