Asking a priest to visit my non-Catholic father in the hospital

Last Thursday my otherwise healthy middle-aged father was admitted to the hospital for emergency surgery to remove a ruptured appendix and to deal with the peritonitis caused by the rupture. His recovery is not progressing quickly, and when I spoke to him on the phone this evening his voice sounded almost ghastly. His doctors do expect him to make a full recovery in time, but he’s very frightened all the same.

I’m wondering if it would be prudent to ask the priest from my home parish to visit him even though he’s not Catholic or a practicing/believing Christian of any stripe (as far as we know, he is a validly baptized protestant). I’m conflicted because my mother is Lutheran and may want to send her minister to my father as well. I don’t want to compete with my mom, but I really want my dad to turn not just to Christ, but to the fullness of Christ as found in the heart of the Church. Perhaps it would simply be more prudent to have multiple masses offered for him. Any thoughts?

It would be a kind thing to request a hospital visit from your Priest. Sometimes a Priest will only be able to visit for Anointing of the Sick, however, they will have a Deacon or a lay person to make hospital visits and pray with people. A call to the Parish office should get your dad’s info to the right people.

In my experience if a priest is given a name for a non-urgent call, he will frequently be willing to stop by while on another call to the hospital within a day or so.
