As I’m at it… would you say it’s ok to ask for an extension to fill out my taxes? I am just a bit stressed here right now (this is in Switzerland, not in the US). I know I started too late, and I could probably do it till the end of this month if I really hardly did anything else anymore, but it is just making me nervous and I feel stressed and I don’t want to do it all at once.
Is it moral to ask for an extension, or is this too lame an excuse? Is it selfish to ask for an extension just because I don’t feel like spending all my free time on taxes now?

If such extentions are available and are routinely granted for those who are “late”, it’s not amoral…particularly if they owe you money, instead of vice-versa.

The are routinely granted. To ask for an extension to May 31 is free. (If longer, it costs you money.) All you have to do is fill in the respective form, mention a reason, and mail it. I just hope I am not too late now.

But they certainly don’t owe me money, I have to fill out the declaration in order to find out how much in taxes I will have to pay… However, this is going to be the first time I have even earned enough to be above the tax free amount. It’s not going to be a huge sum. It’s just all more complicated than I thought, and I want to do it correctly.

I am just worried that i am being selfish or lazy if I say I just don’t want to stress like this now and ask for an extension. Laziness is a sin. But is it lazy to say I also need time for other things? That this is just not my thing and it is driving me nuts if I have to do it all so fast now?

When is the deadline for you? Ours is still a couple weeks away, and if someone here didn’t have what they needed or needed help that wasn’t available until after April 15, there’s no reason not to request the extention. Even just not getting around to it isn’t that big a deal to me, as long as you follow whatever rules there are regarding extentions. I think your reasons sound a lot better than “I just didn’t do it yet.”

The deadline is March 31. 😦
I know I should have started earlier. When I got the forms it was still so far away.
A lot of people I think ask for an extension routinely, just so they have more time, so there is nothing wrong with it per se probably. Maybe I just want to make it hard for myself again. 😦

Ask for the extension this year and resolve to get them done on time in the future now that you know more about the amount of time and effort required.

I don’t think this is a moral issue.

Ask if you want to: They will either say yes or no.
