The Catholic Church makes that claim, and can back that claim up with her history up to the time of Jesus Christ’s appearance on earth. It can claim a record of 266 Popes up to the time of St.Peter, the first Pope appointed by Jesus Christ. There is a great deal of circumstantial evidence that Jesus founded the Church, and by the gift of Faith this claim can be verified. It has produced Saints based on the teachings of Jesus, including miracles, it also survived heresies, wars, fulfilling the promise made by Jesus, that the gates of Hell will not prevail against her. Many Churches today have split from the Church, and they wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for the Christian Catholic Faith. The Bible has it’s origin from the Apostles and their students which is regarded as the Inspired Word of God. The Church’s deposit of Faith is Holy Scripture, and Apostolic Tradition No other Church can make what is regarded as these historical statements, and back them up. It stands strong for what it professes.

Can’t the Eastern orthodox churches make the same claim? Weren’t we all one until the split?
 
Both the Western and Eastern churches (Catholic/Universal and Orthordox) are known as the two lungs.

We pray for their unification.

I would suggest that you read the Earth Church Fathers. That is a good starting point.

Also the Lord Himself gave us all the confidence we need in Matthew 16:18.

The gates of hell have not prevailed against the very Church HE established.

Jesus does NOT lie.

Before the Great Schism, there was only one Catholic Church.

The Eastern Orthodox split from Rome for reasons which I see as having more to do with culture than theological reasons.

All you have to do is go back a century. Is the Catholic Church still there? Check.
Okay, now go back another century…and another…all the way to the century that Jesus rose from the dead. Check. I dare you (in a friendly way of course ;)) to find a time after Christ died that the Catholic Church was not around. Of course, if you find a spot in history where you think it wasn’t there, then by all means post it here and we’ll mull over it.

I think you meant to type “Early Church Fathers.” 🙂

It would also be good for the original poster to read the Letters of Ignatius…they go way back to the beginnings of the Church. Just google them and read.

The first Christians had no doubts about how to determine which was the true Church and which doctrines the true teachings of Christ. The test was simple: Just trace the apostolic succession of the claimants.
Apostolic succession is the line of bishops stretching back to the apostles. All over the world, all Catholic bishops are part of a lineage that goes back to the time of the apostles, something that is impossible in Protestant denominations (most of which do not even claim to have bishops).
