My daughter who is 18 has no interest in attending mass or praying. Her catechesis growing up was very shaky and that’s my fault. Please pray for her to return to the church and seek Jesus in her life.

Prayers offered for your daughter. Don’t give up on her. Keep inviting her, perhaps dangling an offer of breakfast out afterwards. Don’t push, she may come back on her own.

Our Blessed Mother will help.
Hail Mary
Full of Grace
the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb
Jesus.
Holy Mary
Mother of God
pray for us sinners
now and at the hour of our death
amen.

A Prayer to St. Monica, for Lost Souls

Sainted mother of Augustine the sinner, the Lord
Jesus mercifully regarded your tears. The conversion
of your son to a genuinely holy life was the fruit of Your
prayers. From the heights of your heavenly home,
happy mother of your saintly son, pray for those who
wander far from God and add your prayers to those
of all parents who sorrow over the straying souls
of their sons and daughters. Pray for us that, following
your example and that of all God’s children, we may
at length enjoy the eternal vision of Our Father
in Heaven. Amen.

Our Father, Who art in heaven,

Hallowed be Thy Name.

Thy Kingdom come.

Thy Will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

Amen.

We parents all look back and see where we might have done better.
Maybe a prayer I wrote when my children started on their paths with the good and the not-so-good

Prayer for Youth

Holy Spirit please bring Your great power and influence into their lives and lead students into the fullness of God’s love and God’s purposes for their lives and for the mental, physical and spiritual needs of themselves and of others

Jesus, they stand at the crossroads, our youth. They no longer trustfully accept the values or directions of their seniors, unless it proves convenient or appears to have integrity enough to override convenience. They no longer trustfully accept the values or directions of their seniors unless these have integrity enough to override worldly values.

Grant us grace to live and love in cheerful and sincere witness of Your gospel, striving for goodness, justice, and unselfish caring in the way that we deal with them. Thus, they may perceive the value and validity of Christian (Catholic) commitment. Let them recognise, however, that they can no more expect us to be perfect and faultless than we should expect perfection of them.

By not demanding more than they can reasonably offer, let them see that while none of us is perfect, each ought to try for one’s best according to nature and ability. Grant us wisdom and love to permit them their freedom to follow their own directions, which are as valid to them as ours are to ourselves.

Give us grace to understand and to forgive their mistakes, knowing that we ourselves frequently err. Grant them to discover You through our understanding and forgiveness, and lead them to find healing and growth in Scripture and in Your Sacraments. Let us witness to them, without trying to break them to our mature wisdom, lest we, by our inflexibility or judgement, cause anyone to lose himself/herself and You for a time or forever.

The pain in our hearts they may not understand until in their own young they confront these moments of anxiety, conflict and uncertainty.

Heal our hearts and minds with hope. Give us trust in Your hidden leading and protection of them, so that we respond to them gently, steadily, wisely, and with peace. Help us to preserve their balance and identity, to foster their reverence for and nurture of Your unique image within themselves and in others for the way that we love and respect them.

Grant Your light to illuminate their paths, so that they may see to clear away errors and barriers that dim the wonderful unique celebration of Your living image within them.

Dear Jesus, we confess our frailty, our sinfulness, our meagre witness, and appeal humbly to You. We cannot contend alone with such sensitive and crucial responsibility regarding our young ones, and our anxieties may sometimes threaten to swamp our faith or judgement. Please help us to be wise, trusting and mature.

Our failures and mistakes regarding them appear to remain as crosses in their lives and in our hearts.

Please do not allow our sadness to become self-recrimination, nor impatience towards them. Let it simply be confident prayer that You will take them to your heart, and fill them with Your Spirit to heal them and lead them patiently into the way of Your living gospel. If this path is long and arduous, please grant us the powerful faith of a Monica.

Whatever paths they wander by, our children — through us, their elders put Your hand gently on their shoulders, steady and warm. Look into their eyes with deep caring and friendship. Let them see their preciousness, their rich possibilities, and their kinship in You.

Let them know that they can share their laughter as well as their sorrows. Eat bread with them, listen and respond. Teach by example that is cheerful, faithful, gentle, and strong. Walk with us beside them supportively without intrusion—letting go, as their need requires but always prayerfully near in the quiet presence of Your Spirit.

Thank You, dear Jesus who loves our young ones more than we fathom. You are our hope for them. February 1982

Our children and family love

Father, in Jesus’ name, please give us unconditional love for each other. Let us be sensitive to each other’s needs, and ready to make allowances for each other’s weakness or disposition. Help us to interact courteously and honestly, without fear of rejection. Let us encourage each other to develop our talents and potential. Help us lead each other to goodness and wholeness, through mutual encouragement and kindness.

Where it is beneficial, give us wisdom to correct each other lovingly and firmly, without harsh criticism that damages relationship and self-esteem. Give us wisdom not to be reactively unkind or restrictive, or opposed to change that may enrich anyone’s lives. Help us to forgive others when they hurt us, and to repent our own offence to anyone. Forgive our failures in prayer, penance and witness towards others, and supply what is lacking with fullness of life in You.

God please form our children into true Christians. Inspire them to desire and love You and to consecrate themselves as delightful channels of Your goodness. Develop and enhance their gifts, so that each grows in wholeness and holiness. Preserve them from sin, but make them aware of Your great mercy.

Should our children abandon Your Church, please restore them quickly to Sacrament and divine truth. Through Your Spirit, enlighten those who doubt You, ignore You or are lukewarm. If their absence is protracted, please nevertheless fulfil Your will in them.

Through their journeying, allow them to bring new gifts into our midst. Please always watch over them and their families in all their needs and endeavours. Thank You for Your love of them, which infinitely exceeds our own. Please always guide and protect them.

Jesus may we walk with You. Let Your promises be fulfilled in our lives for Your honour and for others’ blessing. Use us for Your purposes. Let Your Holy Spirit guide and empower us with gifts to serve You and people for You. God, let us love each other with Your love. Lent 1980

“Stop your crying and wipe away your tears. All that you have done for your children will not go unrewarded; they will return from the enemy’s land. There is hope for your future; your children will come back home. I, the Lord, have spoken.” [Jeremiah 31:16-17]

My Family

Loving God, I thank You for everyone in my family, for their goodness and abilities and for the difficulties that they have overcome. Thank You for our mutual love and forgiveness of flaws or failures.

Jesus taught that whatever our other achievements, it is upon our charity that You will judge us. Scripture tells us “charity covers a multitude of sins” . Let charity cover the sins of everyone in our families, whether they believe in You or not. Let it implore Your everlasting mercy and redemption for each of us. Let each one remember Jesus’ account of the final judgement, and be encouraged to continue in loving and charitable works.

Lead each family member to heaven, welcoming the loving and kind intentions and acts of their lives as evidence of their worthiness to be counted with the “sheep” of “the Good Shepherd on the Day of Judgement”. If any of them overlook relationship with You or doubt Your existence, let the love and life manifest in their lives prove their fidelity to Your Spirit. Let them experience and embrace Your merciful love as they enter eternal life.

Yet my greatest desire is that my children soon return to the Sacraments and kneel beside me at holy Mass, living Your truth and loving You as I do. Please grant this most urgent prayer of my heart for my children.

I offer my family to Your divine mercy, through the merits of Jesus, with the prayers of all saints and angels. Make us a delight to You in the way love characterises our lives.

Conversion of souls

Holy God, I share a spark of Your desire for the lasting happiness and peace of other people.
I desire the efficacy of Your priests and believers who are You working through us in human form.

However, You alone breathe life into our prayer and service.
You alone make our concern fruitful and our efforts full of faith, hope, and blessing.
Therefore, I trust You, our God, to be the petition and the fulfilment of what otherwise remains as futile toil, meaningless words, and lifeless hope.
I trust to Your grace in my efforts and prayers.
Let Your kingdom come.

On behalf of others

Heavenly Father, encouraged by the Eucharist in which Jesus gives Himself wholly to multitudes of communicants throughout time, I pray concurrently for everyone, for my family, physical and spiritual, as if each were the only one.

I pray on behalf of Your faithful ones; of those who are sadly denied Communion; of the unbelieving, of the discouraged and of all who are ever denied ministry of their faith, all those who are suffering in any way, so that You may unite their deprivation, misery, even torment of body, to Jesus in His Eucharist. I offer their struggles and achievements, so that, even if unaware, they share in the spiritual life of the Church.

I know that in Your great love You will accept my prayer on their behalf, in union with Jesus in whom everything attains infinite value, however unworthy the supplicant. Let it give them comfort and peace, and full Communion in You. Let it obtain pardon for their sins and let it obtain their faith, hope and charity despite materialism or injustice that confronts and embroils them.

Father, through crucified and risen Jesus, I trust You to share to repletion the lowly bread of my prayer that is leavened to infinite abundance by communion in You. Give my prayer again and again through Him who endlessly gives Himself wholly to each person in the Eucharist. Please enflame me (and all Christians) with gospel authenticity that will also ignite others with faith and ministry. Thank You God who acts in us beyond human understanding. Lent 1980

Saint Michael, the archangel, defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil, may God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do you, O’ Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God thrust into Hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.
