Is it a sin to ask for the gift of tongues because you know that others have it?

the charismatic gifts, Paul says, are given specifically for building up the Church, so to ask for any other reason is indeed wrong.

I said wrong, I did not say sin.
we should not be dabbling in the charismatic gifts and praise at all unless as part of an approved ecclesial movement with competent spiritual direction. so please ask for direction from the priest who is leading your group, not from anonymous people, who don’t know much about the charismatic gifts, who are poised to take over this thread with their own rants against them

link to Servant Books, who have a great selection of books on authentic Catholic Charismatic spirituality

this imprint carries in general a line of very orthodox reliable Catholic writers, including Scott and Kimberly Hahn, distributed by St. Anthony Messenger Press, a publisher that has shifted in recent years to more and better writers than in the past.

If you want to ask for a gift why would you ask for that one. Paul states that it does NOTHING to build up the community of the church.

I was just going to do just that. But I have been shamed into better manners. Thanks!
😉

gotcha
I just don’t have the energy for a charismatic-bashing thread just now.

One might consider praying for fortitude, so one isn’t tempted to bend to peer pressure, no matter how spiritual in nature it may appear.

Or one might consider praying for guidance in using the gifts God has already given so that they may be used in better service of the Lord.
