My Priest handles two Churches. He’ll have mass tonight for Ascension at one and another tomorrow at the other. My question is; Since the Holy Day of Ascension was officially moved to Sunday does the majority of Roman Catholics here still celebrate Mass on Thursday as a Holy day?

He Chosen By God; God will accept His decision, no doubt with reasons we amy not know 🙂

Check with your diocese* as to when the HDO is according to your bishop. Even if it isn’t celebrated this Thursday, you can obviously still attend Mass. Your priest should use the readings for the Easter weekday. If your diocese still maintains Thursday as the HDO, you must attend Mass and your priest will use the readings for Ascension.

*In the US Boston, Hartford, NY, Newark, Omaha, and Philly celebrate Ascension on Thursday. Everywhere else has moved the HDO to Sunday.

Edited to add:I do not know what dioceses around the world have decided about the HDO. You’d have to look up whichever ones you are interested in.
 
Although the bishop has the right to transfer certain feasts, I would speculate that the for the folks on this board who regularly attend the EF, they most likely follow the 1962 liturgical calendar, where Ascension Thursday was a Holy Day of Obligation and not transferred. So, with no scientific data to back me up, I expect that those who have access to a parish that exclusively offers Mass in the EF will most likely have an Ascension Thursday Mass and it will be attended by the majority of its parishioners even though the feast may be transferred in that diocese. It is not transferred everywhere. My experience is that if someone is drawn to the EF, they will attend whenever possible even if the obligation to attend has been alleviated.

However, there are certainly those (like my Mom) who attend the OF and will go to Mass on Ascension Thursday regardless of which Mass is celebrated and regardless of its being transferred…

If the Bishop is permitted to move celebration of Ascension from Thursday to Sunday and has done so, then when we decide to celebrate it is a moot point.

If the Bishop has moved it to Sunday then it is Sunday.

We can decide to do anything we want Thursday, but if we go to Mass we will hear the readings from Thursday of the 6th week of Easter. Even the Liturgy of the Hours is changed in those diocese where the option to move the feast has been taken.

Thanks all…I attend the mass but was a tad bit curious as I’m not in the Philly Diocese…I’m in the Altoona, Johnstown Diocese in PA…

The Diocese is Altoona-Johnstown is still within the Province of Philadelphia (which covers the entire Commonwealth of Pennsylvania), where the solemnity remains on Thursday.
 
You will be going to mass on Sunday, so that’s covered. If you attend on Thursday as well, since you’re not sure what you’re diocese planning, you will have fulfilled your obligation on one of the two days.

If your diocese has a website, you’ll be able to find its liturgical calendar there.

Just to clarify. You are speaking of the ordinary form mass only.
If you were to go to your local traditional mass on Thursday, it will be the mass of Ascension Thursday.

EF communities run by secular priests will follow the older Roman Calendar. They will celebrate the Ascension on Thursday.

Thank you again. I’m not connected to the bigger Catholic churches as I go to a small rural but very important church. So its nice to be able to get feedback on here from more of my peers. My church started out as Someones residence. In 1796. Fr. Demetrius Gallitzin stopped by to water his horse. By 1798 Fr. Demetrius Gallitzin had founded our Parish as an organized entity.

I’m altar serving at Mass tomorrow night followed by a novena to St. Jude Thaddeus with Benediction so I’m good either way. Depending on which priest or deacon does the novena, I may have to lead the O Salutaris and Tantum Ergo.

We know the hymn you are referring to as Tantum Ergo as Pange Lingua. Pange Lingua has been sung at our parish for as long as I’ve been alive on Holy Thursday.
