Asking priests for a copy of their sermon

Personally I would think that you will retain what really speaks to you and some things that you don’t remember at first may come to you later. Think of it like “getting it” at the cellular level. Hope this is helpful.

There’s no harm in asking. Most priests would be happy you are interested.

I remember seeing the notes that one priest used to give his homily. If I remember correctly, it consisted of three words. It would be hard to get a copy of that homily!
Effective speaking style varies widely.. Some do best with a script which has all the words. Our priest settled on this after trying different things.

Others plan ahead but speak without even an outline. Until he got transferred the second priest we had for a while did this–so week to week we alternated between two of the best homilists I’ve encountered who were at opposite ends.

When I was in a college classroom, I had outlines to make sure I hit all the topics. I would probably be painful to listen to on a fully prepared text. I also provided my outlines to students for note-taking.

Anyway, there’s a whole spectrum suited to different styles. Be happy if your priest uses what works best for him.

p.s. One day I tried writing out my lecture to see what happened. I ended up with a partial textbook full of footnotes . . . The students loved it, and some used it instead of the book. But it was far from a transcript of what I ended up saying . . .

Lol, I just did this today! I was visiting a parish and didn’t even know him, but his homily was good! He didn’t have notes to give though, so I will have to write what I can remember down (I am usually trying to keep young boys quiet so note taking during the homily is hard)

A Priest once asked me - after mass - what I thought of his sermon -
I was honest - " If you had to write it down and read it - How am " I " - suppose to remember it "
