Asking Saints/Mary to pray for you even when you don't believe?

I’m exploring the Catholic faith. I find it very interesting and I find that I really enjoy mass. Here’s my problem, I understand about Mary and the Saint’s mentally but I just can’t get comfortable doing it myself. I have prayed to God about it and asked him to show me the right way…in the mean time would it be wrong of me to ask a Saint or Mary to pray for me even if I’m not yet convinced…maybe I don’t feel comfortable 'cause I’ve never done it before and have always been taught it’s wrong…I’m thinking maybe asking the saints/Mary to pray for me will help me in some way…what do you think?

Malia, you’re free to ask anyone in our heavenly family to pray for you, just as you are free to ask us who are still on earth. The fact that you’re not sure about me, for instance, doesn’t mean you can’t ask me for prayer. All you have to go on is my public profile and any posts you look up.You don’t know me, have no reason to trust me, no reason to think, “Trishie will care. She’ll genuinely pray for me.” Would that stop you from asking me? I’ll pray for you anyway. So will the members of our heavenly family. We are, all of us, members of the communion of saint, of the Body of Christ. Just ask them naturally and simply. You don’t have to use set prayers. Just be you.

I believe that just by simply asking the Blessed Mother and the Communion of Saints to pray for you is already placing you on the right path.

The Catholic Church doesn’t just cover the warm, living bodies in the pews. We are a universal Church, meaning that we have the Church Triumphant (the saints in heaven), the Church Suffering (the souls in purgatory) and the Church Militant (those of us who are still on this earth). Remember that St. Paul speaks of an unseen cloud of witnesses. These are, in fact, the saints.

Even Jesus makes reference to this when He reminds his detractors that God introduces Himself as the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. He is the God of the living and not the dead. Thus, the saints are still with us in a unique and powerful way, Mary, moreso, because, as Catholics, we believe that she was assumed (taken up) body and soul into heaven. Unlike Jesus, who ascended on his own power, Mary was taken up.

I used to have trouble asking Mary and the Saints to pray for me. I just started to pray and after a while I had no problem.

The first time I said the Hail Mary I prefaced it with “If this isn’t right, Lord, let me know in some way.”

He never did, and honestly, it was more the reverse. Use the same disclaimer I did if you want, but I felt so comfortable, and so peaceful (and it honestly felt like different than when I prayed to God, which was interesting and unexpected). Just start. Here’s the Hail Mary if you don’t know it:

“Hail Mary, full of Grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen”

Or try a “Blessed Mary, pray for me” and leave it at that. Build up to the Hail Mary and devotion to the saints.

One way to think of it is its like asking friends with really good connections to ask for something on your behalf. If that makes sense. They dont have any power themselves but they have really good connections to those in charge.

If you are not comfortable praying to saints, try researching and learning about a particular saint you might identify with. My favorite saint is St. Faustina because she was sooo humble and everything she did was for the love of Jesus Christ.

Also, try researching Our Lady of Guadalupe. The scientific evidence is very convincing. Her appearance started the GREATEST MASS CONVERSION in the history of mankind. 9,000,000 million people were baptized into the Catholic faith during the 10 years following her appearance!
