Asperger's Syndrome?

Someone mentioned sensory integration…ah yes. My son will not wear shorts. When he was little it took about 6 weeks to transition him from winter wear to summer, and then again 6 weeks to transition him to long sleeves and pants. When he got to be 11, he just began to wear short sleeves and long pants all the time. That was his way of working out this issue for himself.

One thing I cannot understand however…he is also sound sensitive and musically gifted. As a child (and today as well) he abhored balloons. The sound of a balloon popping sent him into fits. The sound literally hurt him. How did this kid become an accomplished drummer? I have no clue. The sounds of drums, electric guitar etc have no affect, but there are other sounds that literally send him into a rage.

Very odd.

Cheddarsox,
My son used to box his ears in the school hallway when changing classes because he was bothered by the noise. Yet, he comes home and sits 5 inches from the TV and puts the volume up full blast. Go figure. I’ve noticed my son’s Dad’s family does that (watch TV at full volume 24/7) yet they all say it comes from “my side”.

I just found this thread and wanted to add my experience. I am 41, married, and was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome two months ago.

My wife was taking a college class and AS came up. After she looked into it, she said that I sounded like some of the people she had been readng about. That eventually led to the diagnosis, which took some time, as there are not many specialists in this area for AS, let alone for adults with AS.

I have a lot of the characteristics of aspies: stimming, monologues, obscure interests (dead languages, trivia, finding mistakes in movies), poor social skills, lack of friends, extremely poor driving. I have trouble judging distances and balancing; clumsiness is a constant issue.

On the other hand, my language skills are excellent, and I can learn a new language in a couple of weeks. I have extremely sensitive hearing (not always a bad thing), and my calligraphy has won awards. I belong to Mensa and the KofC and manage to have a reasonably good life, in spite of my problems.

To the other resources mentioned I would add www.wrongplanet.net. It is a site for aspies and those who love them.

Getting my diagnosis was one of the most important events in my life; it explains so much about me. Anyone who gets diagnosed as a child is fortunate because of the long years of pain that can be avoided with proper treatment.

My prayers are with you.
