Asperges in the OF

I wish they did that in the OF as its such a nice way to start Mass in the EF. During Easter, the priests in the OF masses I go to will do a blessing over the water then walk around and sprinkle the faithful while the choir sings some type of hymn.

They DO do it in the OF. At our abbey, when the holy water is blessed they sing one of the Asperges settings in Latin, and during Easter season, Vidi Aquam. It is in the official Latin chant book for the OF, the 1974 Graduale Romanum.

Our abbot told us a funny story about when he was a novice and the ball on the end of the aspergillum flew off as the abbot of that time was sprinkling the faithful at Mass :eek:

An instituted acolyte at my parish who is preparing for ordination to the diaconate helped the priest with the Asperges. (I think that’s illicit, but what’s done is done 🤷) His aspergillum was rattling…and as he sprinkled me it took all of my willpower to not flinch in case the end went flying! :whistle:

They do the same thing at St. Gregory’s Abbey.

Not much danger of losing an eye, but it does throw off a very large amount of Holy Water!

The normal procedure at the abbey is that an acolyte holds the bucket of holy water while the abbot sprinkles, dipping the aspergillum as needed as he proceeds down the nave.
 
A priest in Hawaii used to use branches cut from a tree on property. Fig perhaps. It worked quite well and the leaves were small so if any went flying, no worries!

Do people ever genuflect as they get hit with the holy water?

I’ve learned to do that at the TLM but we never did growing up with the OF. Then again, I think we did almost everything wrong (according to the Church’s rubrics) back then, so maybe this is another thing we just didn’t know to do.

In an effort to be natural, some priests have actually used broccoli to do the sprinkling rite. I must say, based on my experiences in the kitchen, that a good firm stalk probably holds more water than an aspergillum.
