Assemblies of God-what do they believe?

A friend of mine has left the Catholic Church to become a minister in the Assemblies of God church. She married the son of a minister and after developing a allergy to wheat and recieveing consolation and assistance by the A. of God community felt called to be a part of their church.
I was curious about this denomination and wondering if anyone could tell me about their believes/history.
Also, is it possible that she could be called to serve there despite the fact that she was raised Catholic.
Would the church see this as a mortal sin?

And yes, becoming a minister in another religious group is a mortal sin since it means rejecting the Catholic Church. When a Christian of any kind enters the AoG they are re-baptized to show their rejection of their former communion. I think you’d better advise your friend to talk to her bishop before taking such a rash step, allergy or no allergy!

Your friend can still receive Christ in the wine, since Christ is 100% present in both the body and the blood. Assemblies of God is a pentecostal denomination. Not good at all.

And there are now low-gluten content hosts (if that is the part of wheat she is allergic to) that are approved for communion as well.

However, the issue here doesn’t seem to be communion (otherwise she wouldn’t be willing to leave the Catholic church for a Protestant one), but one of community. Encourage your friend to perhaps look into some smaller parishes like mission churches if at all possible. It will provide the sense of community she is seeking. However, if she’s already talking about being a minister in their church, your realistic hope should be planting seeds in her heart. Remember that every word and action you present is seen as a spokesperson for Catholicism. And take note, too, of what led to her conversion. While you might not keep her from converting, you might be able to help someone else struggling to keep the faith with a simple good morning or other conversation starter on some Sunday morning.

Assemblies of God are charismatic in their official beliefs , believe we can turn away from God and loose our salvation (arminian) as are most all pentacostals; I say most since sola scriptura invites a plethora of possible beliefs. If your friend willingly by her own volition left the Catholic Church with full knowledge of what she was doing then that would objectively be a mortal sin, however, we can’t assume that we know for sure that she is in mortal sin (only God can since He knows our hearts) and some people leave the Church without even knowing what they are doing; however, she isn’t where God wants her to be.

Pray for her, do sacrificial penance for her–James 5:16…“the fervent prayer of a righteous person is very powerful.” A good friend of mine who had converted to Catholicism many years before me, also a former Baptist once told me that “there aren’t any prayers like Catholic prayers” and I didn’t know what he meant until I prayed as a Catholic because his prayers lead me to the fullness of truth in the Catholic Church.
Pray that she will come back to the Catholic faith, to the Eucharist. Make sure you keep a communication line open with her. God will lead you to gently communicate to her that she should come back at home to the Catholic Church.
