Hi, Ladybri,

I think even a casual reading of Church Militant’s post would indicate that he did not say there was anything wrong with Charismatic Catholicism that stays within the boundaries set by the CC.

And, aftter giving your post serious consideration, I do not see one’s personal relationship with Christ would be compromised by speaking to Him in one’s native language. Do you see any danger in this? Thi issue, at least as I appreciate it, is speaking to Christ in tongues. Given Paul identified abuse in some of the mambers and laid out some rather specific guidelines (as quoted by Chruch Militant) - it just makes sense to be cautious in this area.

God bless
You may not agree with charismatic Catholicism, but in fact, there is nothing wrong with it since what they do is scriptural except for those times as with evangelical churches, they all speak at once in tongues against what Paul describes, and it is certainly approved by the Holy See.

To have a personal relationship with one’s personal Lord and Savior is a great thing to have. It can mean different things to different people, but I believe one should have a personal relationship with God and accept Him into their hearts, meaning “knowing” Him and loving Him with all our hearts which is the first Commandment. I heard a recent Catholic teaching on this, that this is the goal, to invite Jesus into our hearts. Not simply “believe” in God as the demons do this’. Scripture?

We are supposed to have a relationship with God, i.e., being able to talk to Him as a friend, confide in Him, pray to Him, listen to Him, study His Word. That is what a good friend or relationship consists of talking and listening, being present, comforting, etc. If that is not a healthy relationship, I don’t know what is!

I think that’s what I said Bri. What do I have to do? Speak it in tongues so you can interpret and understand it? Sheesh!🤷

Do me a favor Bri…show me where that phrase is used in the New Testament (it’s not) or in the catechism of the Catholic Church (again…it’s not). It’s an over simplified version of the Gospel that some N-Cs use as part of their Gospel message. (Who REALLY Preaches “A Different Gospel”?) It is also pretty much an integral part of Assembly of God preaching.

And if you take the time to look at the “relationships with Jesus” that we see both in the New Testament and in the lives of the saints throughout history then I think you see that has been the case all along, but it doesn’t match the description of that term s used my modern post reformation faith communities like the AoG. 🤷

Thank you tqualey. You’re exactly correct. 👍

Or in Latin or any other language one is comfortable with for that matter, right?

Exactly! But let’s keep in mind that this also involves tongues that are not a prayer language and that if spoken aloud also require an interpreter and the scrutiny of the priests and the whole church present, (as per St. Paul’s epistle).

My problem is that I have seen much abuse of these gifts and have found that many Charismatic/Pentecostals tend to sort of gloss it all off as if it’s not a problem when the Bible and the Church both say otherwise.

I bear none of these folks any ill will, but I know what I’m talking about and I think it’s very important that every last one of them make very sure that they police themselves as the New Testament says they should, so that no one is misled or misinformed about the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

The Bible does say that it’s possible for this to be manifested by spirits other that God’s. Discernment and discipline are critically important. In fact, I personally have seen some AoG services where it was done right and it was a real blessing.
