Thank you!!! this will help me Identify with my Aunt and Uncle who are Assembly of God (of Pentecostal). My uncle is a minister. I still have a hard time getting antagonized by them. What is it about the situation that antagonizes you? Are they pushy about religion, is it the diferences in beliefs or are you uncomfortable with charismatic Christianity? If it’s the last, you might check with your parish or diocese to see if there’s a Catholic charismatic prayer group you could attend to learn more about it from a Catholic perspective.
My closest friend is Assembly of God and her husband is a minister. She answered an altar call and gave her life to Jesus at the age of 7. She’s an outstanding example of Christianity, very involved in works of mercy and charity even though her health problems make it very difficult. If she takes exception to something in Catholicism, it’s not what you might expect (Marianism, The Eucharist, the Pope); her difference of opinion is on levels of sin. To Protestants, sin is sin; one sin is not more damning than another since she believes a professed Christian is “once saved, always saved.”

It is my impression that their beliefs are closely akin to those of Baptists, but with a Pentecostal element added.

Pentacostal - Arminian disposition (free will) - faith alone - bible inerrant. Baptism with the Holy Spirit. Most controversial doctrine is that Tounges is the “only” (not a, but “only”) sign of intitial baptism of the Holy Spirit.
Good people searching for God and the spirit moves in their Churches. Not very liturgical - never heard the Lord’s prayer in their Church and they don’t follow, in any meaningful way, the traditional calendar (e.g., advent, etc). Many (not all) will call Easter - “Resurrection Day”).

Their worldwide headquarters is less than an hour’s drive from where I sit, and there a lot of them around here. By and large, they’re decent folk, and, when you talk to them about religion, you discover we have a lot in common. We do get some converts from the AG in our parish. Most that I know are not particularly hostile toward Catholicism, though some are. My son’s employer is an AG and lets my son off for Holy Days if my son requests it.
Some Catholics have left the Church to go to the AG. Not in this parish, but I have heard of it in other places. I think the appeal is essentially emotional, because AG services do build up quite a head of emotional steam. Also, they have kind of an inordinate belief in miraculous interventions. Many tend to see ordinary, even inevitable events as “miracles” because they prayed for them to happen. This can also lead to tremendous disappointments, and I have seen AGs leave their church because of them.

They are very anti-Catholic. (Aunt and Uncle). They repeatedly condemn us to hell, accuse my of idolatry and not reading the correct Bible version. They believe it watching TV is a sin, anything other than church and prayer on Sunday is a sin, gym class in school and extra ciricular activities are sins, any music outside Gospel music is sinful just to name a few. They aren’t charitable and do hoard their money

Some Protestant denominations, as well as individuals within other denominations, hold OSAS.
The overwhelming number of Assemblies of God ministers and members do not believe in OSAS, they preach that one can “backslide” and invite those who have backslid to come forward during the altar call and re-dedicate themselves to Christ.

The A/Gs run a wide range, those who live/act/dress like any other evangelical Christian to the strong holiness/pentecostal. Sounds as if your relatives are on the holiness/pentecostal side of the curve.
Love them, let them see that you Love God and that you DO know your Bible. That will be the best witness to them.

Living among them, I readily agree that they are not all the same by any means. You can have more than one congregation in the same town that are quite different from each other in their practices and beliefs.
They do resemble the Southern Baptists in one way. The actual doctrines of both are extremely basic and unadorned. They do not have much in the way of detailed teachings. A lot of what individual congregations consider their “beliefs” are simply absorbed from the surrounding culture and are not derived from a doctrinal base of their own. The emphasis on Bible-based belief makes that almost inevitable, because one can use snippets from the Bible to argue for nearly anything.
It’s interesting how they do that. It is commonly believed that Catholics do not “know their bible”. Actually, most do, but just not in the same way bible-based church members do. They learn bits and pieces as sort of “debating points”, and can give you chapter and verse. Catholics approach the bible as a whole; know a great deal about it, but can’t give you “chapter and verse” because that’s not the way they learned it, and isn’t the purpose for which they learned it.

Here’s a great book by a former Assembly of God youth pastor who converted to Catholicism.
His title, “The Bible made me Do it”, is awesome.
Challenge your inlaws to read it and show where he made his mistakes.
Tim Staples was raised a Baptist and was an Assembly of God Youth Minister before he met a fellow Marine who knew how to defend the Catholic Faith. He soon became convinced that the Catholic Church was indeed the Church started by Christ.
