Assisi or Xavier?

Some of the commentary I’ve heard so far regarding the new Pope seems to suggest he has taken the name Francis after Francis of Assisi, but I’m wondering if it’s after Xavier after the co founder of the Jesuits.

I understand the new Pope is a Jesuit.

Has there been any clarification on this?

I like him. He seems like a nice guy 😃

He hasnt explained it, at least not yet.

Im leaning towards 1stly Xavier, but his also understanding of Assisi also has it’s symbolism.

So maybe both, not just one or the other.
 
We dont know just yet, at least from his own mouth.

He will be meeting with journalists on Sat.
 
I am inclined to think Xavier, but we don’t know yet. We’ll find it out from his own mouth soon enough.
 
I think either one would be indicative of approximately the same thing. A re-building or re-structuring of the Church which would dovetail with what he has done in Argentina to a great degree.St. Francis of Assisi being told by Jesus to re-build the Church and St. Francis Xavier being there at the formation of one of the most influential religious orders ever founded.
 
If he’s meeting with journalists, maybe he took it after Francis De Sales. He is the patron saint of journalists you know. And one of my favorite saints.

I realize it’s a long shot, but who knows?
 
I’m sure they said Francis Xavier when they introduced him in Latin.

Xavier would make sense since he is a Jesuit.

St. Francis Xavier was a prodigious missionary to the east.
 
The “talking heads” all seem to be saying Assisi, but I don’t know if they even know of Francis Xavier. Xavier would make much more sense for a Jesuit, but who knows? I’ll be very interested in hearing our new pope explain which one he chose.

Yeah, I suspect he thought of both, but the talking heads seem to say they have a source for saying Assisi, so they may be at least partially right.

But yeah, it will be interesting to hear what he says about it.
 
NBC news is tweeting Cardinal Dolan confirmed its Francis of Assisi.

Xavier was a missionary (New Evangelization, Jesuit) and Francis of Assisi was a reformer (Reform of the reform). It’s perfect.
 
It is Francis of Assisi. He has a great devotion to St. Francis of Assisi as the patron of the poor. This was confirmed by official Vatican press.

In taking a religious name, there is only one Francis, that being Francis of Assisi. All others are used with their the surnames or their second name. For example, if my religious name were after St. Francis Xavier or St. Francis de Sales, it would be Pope Francis Xavier or Pope Francis de Sales.

No one has ever used the name Francis out of respect for the Seraphic Father and out of concern that no one can live up to that ideal.

I don’t believe that the current Holy Father expects to be another Seraphic Father. He does identify himself with the vocation of St. Francis and the Franciscan family to “go and rebuild my Church.”
 
The name is a cross-the-aisle sort of gesture. The Franciscans are the age-old rivals of the Jesuits, and indeed were instrumental in their suppression. In choosing such a name he’s also laying that rivalry to rest and, though a Jesuit, identifying with much that the Franciscans represent.

I never knew this but it makes perfect sense to me. I said on another thread I was stunned to find out there was not previously a Pope named after Francis. I understand better now why that is.

My understanding is the Holy Spirit guides the Cardinals in the election process. So he *has to be *the right man at the right time for the Church today and it’s interesting he’s a fan of Francis 🙂

Saint Francis is the first Catholic Saint I read about, and I immediately liked him. I could identify with him. To me, he was a doer 🙂 I like people who get things done 😃

He seemed to me to be a very pragmatic and practical man in terms of the focus of his mission.

I mean, selling a Missal for money to give to the poor for food then his poor guys having to walk miles to get to a Mass :eek:

Seriously bad time and resource management.

Seriously good, single minded commitment to the objectives of identifying with the poor and the suffering. 😃

I was reminded of this looking at Pope Francis.

I honestly thought, when he came out first, and just stood there, then shifted his weight a little, he was going to faint :eek:

Then he spoke.

He sounded so normal and ordinary and approachable and a man of the people.

There was an incredible warmth in his voice.

I think Francis is a good name for this Pope.

From what little I know, this might be the right time for a man who has such devotion to the mission of Saint Francis.

Meh, what do I know - I just know I liked the guy the minute I saw him 😃

Thanks for clarifying. I always appreciate your explanations. Would you mind explaning to me the definition of Seraphic? I assume it’s more an adjective, but wanted to make sure it didn’t have a specific meaning in our faith.
 
Shows how much I know. I saw a Yahoo! report that stated it was St. Francis of Assisi and immediately thought, “you dummies, it’s Xavier.” Guess I figured out who the dummy was! 😛
