i have been having experiences for years now which i have had spiritual advice about from 2 trustworthy priests who concluded that these " flying " or “floating” experiences i am having after nite prayer are probably from God. doing my own research i’ve learned they are like AP or OBE . i NEVER tried anything like this , it happened on it’s own. now i see this stuff all over the internet and it’s all new age stuff and i am very afraid i am being misled. i only want the Truth - could these experiences be real??? HELP

Stay under the guidance of your priest and don’t pay any attention to the Internet gobbledygook.

You might be experiencing sleep paralysis.

If AP/OBE exists (it may just be all in your head), then it is part of your construction as a human being, and like sleep or muscular twitching, is normal and nothing to be afraid of.

We ought not actively seek such experiences as they can be confusing. But if they come unbidden, as a result of your prayer life, hey, enjoy the ride:)🙂

It doesn’t sound right. I would think that most spirtual experience’s actually reveal the self as to make improvement, not detach or insulate…the only time I have felt like I was leaving my body was under severe pain and stress and that happens right before you pass out.

to all -
thank you so much for all your advice… you know - it’s rough to understand stuff we can’t explain. and all the crazy spin out there is scary. i don’t know , but it happens often enough to make you nervous…all i know is that when i am almost asleep , i sometimes feel myself lifted off the bed and i go up . sometimes i feel as though someone is carrying me ( i never see anyone , but i feel someone holding me…but anyway - i just thank you all for your (name removed by moderator)ut and please - keep me in your prayers

It does not exist. It is not real.

When you were up, have you ever looked down to see if it was real?

I am guessing that touching the ceiling would prove that these are real if you knew
that you were not in some dream state. So the best I can come up with is go
get a camera and start it when you begin your night prayer to see if is real.

Just a thought.

It does not exist. It is not real.
thistle, are you saying that there is no supernatural realm whereby this can really happen? God can do anything…anything, He wants to do. How can you be so sure this is not from God?

Peace.

There’s been reported cases of saints who may have had AP/OBE experiences. Case in point, Padre Pio, who would, at times, go into trance states, and then, at that same time, would appear to someone else at some distance.

That said, I think AP/OBE is something that, if God lets it happen to you, that’s great, but it’s not the kind of thing that one should go looking for, since you can end up endangering your soul. Not everything that exists in the non-physical realm is friendly, to put it mildly.

I am sure. Its complete nonsense.

I have had something similar where I float around the room. I understand this is a part of sleep paralysis. Perhaps check out information on that and see if it sounds like what you are experiencing.

I have experienced Sleep Paralysis. There was no sense of flying or of floating. I just couldn’t move.

“With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” - Matthew 19:26
I agree but there is no such thing as astral projection. Simply fanciful imagination of those who claim that.

i thank you all for your advice but i guess supernatural experiences are not to be discussed in the forum ( sorry - i wasnt aware ) . so i am going to let go and let God - thanks again …🙂

A Still, Small Voice: A Practical Guide On Reported Revelations by Fr. Benedict Groeschel, CFR may be of help to you. Although, the book is about private revelations, it touches on discerning paranormal and paramystical experiences. Sections of this book may be of help to you and may lead you to reliable church sources concerning this phenomena. If you truly are experiencing this sort of phenomena, then you need to find a good Spiritual Director who is knowledgeable in this area to guide you.

“Astral projection” is something that’s done deliberately and consciously, or at the least the people who do it claim so. It’s related to new age, shamanism, magic, spiritism and it’s been around a long long time. You don’t want to go there.

Something that comes to you unbidden may be from God and it may not. It could be delusion, gift or deceit. Some of the best advice from saints is that it’s best to ignore whatever you can ignore and not get wrapped up in “experiences.” They can always be a deceit of the devil; there’s no real way to tell.

I’m not being disrespectful here but your average parish priest is not trained or equipped to accompany you on a prayer journey that includes this kind of stuff. If you haven’t, talk to a priest or nun in a contemplative order. Carmelites are really good to talk with and very down to earth. Even if you have to make a long drive, it would be worth it to your spirituality and peace of mind.

There’s too much mystical stuff going on these days, not just among new agers but also among Christians, particularly Catholics. It can’t all be legitimate. It’s so easy for someone who wants a close relationship with God to be terribly misled.

Very good advice! 👍
