Since the Bible condemns astrology, does that mean I cannot attend a workshop to learn how to locate the summer constellations, planets and learn how to use the night sky to point north? How would this be harmful? Thanks.

Astronomy was born from astrology but in modern times they are not the same thing. Astronomy is merely the study of the stars, their movements, what they are composed of and that sort of thing. It in no way embraces predicting the future for individuals or peoples except to predict if an asteroid comes close to earth, and the movement of comets, etc. It’s just a physical science. Nothing spiritual will be discussed, I’m sure, so you’d be fine. 🙂

the workshop you are describing is astronomy not astrology. Astronomy is perfectly ok, being a physical scientific subject.

Go ahead and enjoy!

Thank you for clarifying the difference!
Several years ago televangelist Marilyn Hickey wrote a book called “Signs in the Heavens.” In this book she talked about the various signs of the Zodiac and the fact that God put them in the heavens, not so people could tell the future but so as Genesis chapter 1 says, to “mark the seasons, and signs, and days, and years and to separate light from darkness”(Gen. 1:14-18). Ancient mankind used the stars to tell them when to plow, plant, harvest, and to help them navigate out at sea. She also told how they point to the Messiah, since a special star appeared to guide the Wise Men to the infant Jesus.

Yes. Astrology deals with the idea that our characteristics and temperaments, and even our future destinies are under the control of, and a result of stellular orientation. An example being that if you were born on July 29th you are influenced by the sun and possess certain characteristics such as leadership, artistic ability, passion, etc.

It can be fun to read horoscopes or guess what people’s “signs” are, but we have to keep in mind not to take this seriously, since we are created by God and our unique characteristics are not the result of planetary alignment.
