At least for the Latin Mass Catholics, it was the Feast of the Holy Name yesterday--my thoughts

Maybe the Muslims, atheists, etc. are inheriting the Earth because they don’t say Mohammed-dait, Dawkinsdait, Rousseau-da**it (I put a dash before the “d” in case anyone did not get what the asterisks meant, etc. I guess people used to go to jail for putting “God” before that hyphen or saying “Jesus” and even “Mary” in vain.

Out of curiosity, though, sometimes pious people might let out an “Oh, Lord”. Is that a blasphemy?

That’s also one thing I’m curious about. No one really says “Oh, Jupiter” after hitting their thumbs with a hammer or “Oh, Vishnu” if they sit on a splinter or “Oh, my Buddha” if they are in a bad situation. I wonder why God and Jesus are special exceptions…🤷

I know sometimes I might say ‘Oh Lord’ more as a prayer than anything else - it might be a prayer for patience for myself if I’m in a tough or annoying situation, or a prayer for someone I hear bad news about.

NO.

I can’t speak for pious people, but that depends; most likely in many situations, the answer is no.

I once knew someone who used to say “Oh, my Budda” when she was really mad. I think she used it for comedic value, because most of the times if she could laugh when she was getting mad, she’d calm down.

Whenever I hear someone trying to make Jesus’s middle name start with an H, I ask them what the H stands for, or say something about me not knowing he had a middle name.

God Bless!

I guess the H stands for “ha-Notzri” (“of Nazareth”, “the Nazarene”)? 😃

Now to be serious. The expression dates to at least the late 19th century, although according to Mark Twain it was already old in 1850, and likely originates with the ancient Christian three-letter symbolism IHS. The symbol, derived from the first three letters of the Greek name of Jesus (Ιησούς), is transliterated IHS, IHC, JHS or JHC. Since the transliteration IHS gave rise to the backronym Iesus Hominum Salvator (Jesus savior of men), it is plausible that JHC similarly led to Jesus H. Christ.

Thanks so much for the explaination! I really love learning about etmyologies of words and phrases, so I’ve had a cool “word geek” moment. 😃

God Bless!

They usually say “Christ” or “Christ Lord” (unfortunately, John Candy says that in “Delirious” as well as another powerful blasphemy with a bi*** after it in shouting at a woman) after “H”, so I thought it might mean “Holy”, but I could be wrong.
