now that the Holy Father has passed into Paradise, at Mass, how does the priest pray?

instead of, “We Honor John Paul our Pope, N. Our Bishop and all the clergy…”

Is it, “We Honor John Paul or former Pope, N. Our Bishop…”

or what?

No mention is made of the Pope since there is no Pope. For example:
We offer them for N. our bishop, and for all who hold and teach the catholic faith that comes to us from the apostles

Benedictus:

Exactly what happened at Mass this morning.

It was eerie to not hear his name during Mass.

Just think, if his successor takes the same name, we will hear it once again!

I have heard of both:

“…the successor of John Paul, our pope…”

and

“…the successor of Peter, our pope…”

The idea being that we can pray for the man even though we cannot yet identify him by name. I don’t know how canonical is this practice, however.

I watched the Divine Mercy Mass from Rome on the EWTN rerun last night. Cardinal Ratzinger, I believe, offered the commemoration portion of Eucharistic Prayer III. In it he said, “The episcopal college” in place of “John Paul our Pope”.

Our pastor did something similar today

“For the Cardinal Electors, as they choose our new Pope”

If one looks at the prayer carefully, you will find that the intention is to pray from the particular to the general. The faithful are united in the faith by the visible head of their diocese. This is why he is mentioned in the prayer of the place where it is celebrated. The bishops are united with each other in the episcopacy (which is how we are united in the faith universally) with Peter at their head. This is why the pope is mentioned in the prayer. The Eucharist being celebrated is for those who have died in Christ, all the faithful, the clergy, united in the Bishop who is unitied with the episcopal college and the Bishop of Rome. When a diocesan seat is empty, the naming of the bishop will disappear (sometimes, if there are auxilairy bishops in a dioscese, they will get mentioned). The diocese of Rome is no different. Nor is it for the Masses celebrated around the world when that see is vacant. The naming should simply drop until a new pope is seated.

Now, that said, I can see where someone like the Dean of Cardinals (Ratzinger) could legitimately make an intervention such as he did. Afterall, a bishop will mention “me, your unworthy servant”, and so it might be appropriate for a member of the clergy of Rome (which is what a cardinal is) who is a bishop to mention the “episcopal college” or something along that line, in praying for his breathren in the abcence of the pope. Afterall, there is an intention following mention of the pope and the bishop of the place (in case of the pope, the same person) for the clergy.

I was wondering about this too, the Sunday following the death of JPII our priest made mention during his sermon that this would be his first mass in which he did not pray for JPII, however during a daily mass later that week JPII was prayed for as “our pope John Paul” a long pause then followed, I didn’t know if it was a mistake or not.

I was at CYO convention the weekend that the pope died. The bishop-elect celebrated mass. He was being ordained the next day so he told us at that point in the mass it would be silent. I felt so alone during that time because we had no pope, bishop and we also don’t have a priest, but a retired priest who is filling in.

Today our priest said “for our future Pope”. I thought that was good.

And next Sunday, Holy Spirit willing, we will hear the name of the new Pope spoken in exactly that portion of the Mass.

This morning at Mass, my Priest started to say Pope John Paul the II but caught himself and skipped to our Bishop. He looked a bit sad and he shook his head. Old habits are hard to break, after almost 27 years of saying his name at Mass…

i have heared “the college of cardinals who will select our pope”
and “John- embarassed blush and long silemnt pause, Alexander our bishop” and nothing.
