That woman at the job fair- is she someone you had just met, or do you actually know her? I wouldn’t be too offended if she doesn’t know you well enough to put in a good word for you. I certainly wouldn’t want to do that for someone I didn’t know well enough. And, simply because she works in that department does not necessarily mean she knows anything about the qualifications for that particular position. So, while networking is important, try not to expect more out of people than you should.

It is very hard to put yourself out there all the time and constantly be rejected, or even worse, not hear anything. And although it helps to think that you’re certainly not alone, and that this is a hardship for a lot of people in this country right now- use that knowledge to put yourself ahead of the competition. What are you doing to build your resume? Employers respond well to people who use the time they were unemployed wisely- by working a temp job, volunteering, learning a new skill or building on skills, and so forth. It won’t guarantee you a job, but it will help open up your networking circles as well as provide you with valuable experiences. Also, have you posted your resume on any job boards? After being unemployed for over a year, that is how I found my current job.

Praying for you, I really do hope that you’re able to find something soon.

These rags-to-riches stories, while interesting, tell me a lot about what’s important to that person. Is it all about MONEY? With Rohn, it seems to be. Did he even marry or have a family? What about faith? These motivational people seem to have the most faith in their own human ability to manipulate the world around them. If they do that ethically, I guess it’s OK, but to me, if you haven’t got a belief in God and a relationship with Him, you haven’t got anything.

I agree with you and I am not offended that this lady would not help me. However, the point is, as I bolded, I can not expect more than I should because very few people I met at these events actually have a job that requires my skills. Most hiring managers are there because it makes them look good on their resume, they see how the competition recruits and other self seeking motives. But few actually have a job opening

So my point is, networking is really not effective and I am tired of the pressure to do more

Well, I don’t have any advice that wouldn’t be a retread of what’s already been said, so I’ll just say good luck, and I’ll include you in my prayers this evening.

Perhaps you should try a different angle.

Skills: Do you offer any skills? Perhaps you have a skillset and do not even realize it? Here in Texas, skills sell. Transportation and Energy are big business and they pay well.

Training: Money is tight but could you do some training. I would not recommend private training schools, but community colleges offer lots of training programs.

Faith: We are called to suffer for the glory of God. Some people have medical conditions, some people are surrounded by death, and some people have career crises. Perhaps thank God for what you do have and how blessed you are when other people want what you have. Then maybe your outlook will be different. Accepting you suffering and giving it up to God could change your demeanor and how you present yourself to others.

I am Canadian so I doubt they would give me a job in the USA when there are plenty of citizen who need it.

As for moving, I go on the internet every day to search for jobs and I can honestly say in my field, I probably live in the best place. Other towns do not have as many postings

What about Alberta’s oil sands or Newfoundland’s Hebron project? I don’t know what you do, but it might help you to branch out to a trade like instrumentation or process control until you find your dream job. The pay is really good in both of those trades.

I am pretty sure that the oil fields are not the place for a single woman (assuming that our OP is a single female). I would never recommend that action. Too many single males with a lot of money and just as many vices.

Our OP seems have a skill-set that she wishes to continue using. Something will eventually open up, she is doing everything she can in the meantime.

Have you tried recruiters? You should look for recruiters in your field. But make sure it’s ones that will collect fees from the company where they find you a job. Don’t ever pay a recruiter because that’s just a scam.

The jobs I mentioned are perfect for a single person, because you have 28 days to work and then 28 days to travel or do as you please. It’s a good opportunity to travel and see the world.

I know something may eventually open up, but it is always easier to find a job when you have a job. It isn’t like you can’t leave your job at any time you please.

He does take a little time to get used to. He was a strong Christian and if you listen to more of what he taught you will see he uses a large number of Biblical references. He actually preaches scripture more effectively than most clergy I know.

What he did was use the skills he had to do the best he could. He lifted a lot of people to greater things in their lives, and now rests in heaven. He’s a model of what those not called to church ministry should be doing.

From reading your posts it sounds like you are arguing for and reinforcing your failure. It’s not that you aren’t looking, it’s that you aren’t doing it in such a way that will get you hired. Every time someone has given a solution you dismiss it. From an outside perspective it less like you want a job and more that you want to commiserate and have others tell you that you are ok.

If you want things to change, you’ll need to do things differently than you have been.

I don’t get it. What type of work are you looking for where it’s that difficult to find a position?

Why can you not get a “hold over” job until your dream job comes along, or a lower position at a company that employs people with your desired job, so that you can work your way up? What about volunteering someplace so you can network and get an “in” into the industry?

When I’ve looked for a job, it’s never taken me longer than a month to get one. They weren’t always great jobs, but they made me money and gave me opportunities for moving up to a better job. My current job I have been at for almost 10 years, has almost tripled its salary since the beginning, and I am now in a private office - and I started off here as a $12/hour temp. I took a data entry test at a temp agency and they hired me because I could (name removed by moderator)ut numbers fast.

Don’t do drugs. Drugs are bad, m’kay. Also stay away from prostitutes and strip clubs. I can almost guarantee that 99% of the people who’ve ended up in trouble have ignored at lease one of those simple rules.

If you put in your shift and then go to bed, the odds of being a victim of a crime are slim to none. And really, crime stats for small towns in the Dakotas may not be the best comparison for towns in Alberta and Newfoundland.

Thank you so much! I will let my brother know. He is used to heavy work–farmed for 40 years until the farm he worked on went under. He hasn’t been able to find anything more than seasonal employment since. I know he will be grateful.

And the prayer you posted was beautiful. I’ve been there myself. Only different circumstance. Thank you for caring for your wife during her dark hours. I pray that someone is there to also care for you. Sometimes it is our hardest times that make us realize how important trust is
