They are not legal allegations. *That *would require they be substantiated or dismissed. They are media allegations. The slant and bias I see in the reporting is why I consider it no better than gossip.
 
I certainly agree that it is wrong to accuse the Pope of wrongdoing at this point, but I also agree that these reports are far more serious than “petty gossip”.

Documents and letters have been uncovered which definitely need investigation and explanation. It was very irresponsible and somewhat manipulative to try to dismiss these letters.

The Church must demonstrate more compassion, contrition and responsibility, if she wants to regain some credibility.

It can also be possible that Cardinal Sodano accurately expressed what he believes to be the truth.
 
In the first of two big articles about Maciel and the Legion of Christ’s influence in the Vatican, Jason Berry interviewed a number of former LC seminarians, some by name, including men who are currently priests, who personally testified that they had delivered envelopes stuffed with cash and lavish Christmas gifts, to important cardinals with whom Maciel used to curry favor, including Sodano. In addition to the gifts, Maciel paid for a lavish party for about 20 of Sodano’s family when be was elected cardinal. Interestingly, Cardinal Ratzinger pointedly refused a cash envelope in a meeting with the Legion.

One could hardly expect Sodano, now dean of the college of cardinals, to be objective in the abuse issue.
