so last night, my buddies and i were in our dorm have a small party (about 6 guys) and we were all drinking. we drank together and watched the olympics for a while and ate pizza. i had more to drink than anyone else and as a result was more drunk. i did throw up alittle, not too much, didnt black out, no hangover and i remember everything. now, i definitely knew i was drinking tonight, but i’m confused as to what makes drinking a mortal sin?
is it because i got drunk at all? or is it because of other things, like drinking all the time, or drinking to get drunk to forget? we were just celebrating the end of midterms and watching the olympics. the reason i ask is, i want to know before i go to mass tonight whether or not i should go to confession. and also, i want to understand this matter a bit more and act accordingly in the future.

thanks again for any help

well, i would ask this to your priest in confession, because he can tell you specifically if you committed a mortal sin or not based on the circumstances,

but as far as i understand, it’s sinful at the point of letting yourself get drunk,

the reason drinking and doing drugs is sinful(among other things) is because it dulls the conscience,
a drink once in awhile doesn’t hurt, but getting drunk, especially over and over again, has long term harmful effects on your mind and body,
it’s also sinful because it’s taking drink in excess, which falls under gluttony.

that’s just the basics of it though, i would recommend talking to your priest about it.

I would go by the suggestion given by EmeraldWings.

That being said; there are **Three conditions must be present for commission of a Mortal Sin: (1). the matter must be grave (e.g.), murder, abortion, fornication, adultry, blasphemy, etc. debauchery could fall under mortal sin if it is serious in nature of being repeated by habit. (2); there must be sufficient reflecting on the evil which one is contemplating, and (3); there must be full consent of the will. Various factors can limit these conditions, for example, lack of maturity, force of habit, etc. However, one must never be presume to be incapable of such deadly sin. Mortal sins are forgiven by God through the sinners penitence and sacramental absolution of a priest. **

The above list of three conditions is not correct. In the above list, #2 and #3 are just different ways of stating the same condition. And the condition that is lacking is knowledge that the act is gravely immoral.
  1. grave matter
  2. full knowledge that the act is gravely immoral
  3. full consent (also called full deliberation)
Inebriation would be grave matter if you no longer have use of reason and free will, or if by inebriation you cause, or can reasonably anticipate causing, grave harm (such as driving drunk, or committing sexual sins).

Mate, there is nothing wrong with having a few stubbies (beers) with your mates. You just need to know at what point you should stop, which can be hard to do when you’re having a good time. It all comes down to moderation, which is what your priest is going to tell you.

If you want to drink with your mates but avoid putting your wobbly boots on; one standard drink an hour is a good measure and probably have a glass of water with every drink.

Years ago a rabbi told me a story from jewish tradition: after noah let all the animals off the ark he planted a vineyard. when he finnished planting the angel of darkness showed up with a lamb and sacrificed it and spread the plood accross the vineyard, as it grew the angel showed uo three more time onec with a lion, an monkey and a pig. The moral of the story is this, one or two drinks make you mellow like a lamb a couple more and you become daring and brave like a lion a couple more and every thing becomes a big joke and you act like a monkey keep on drinking and you’ll end up like a pig living in your own filth.
