What does the atheist offer society? Freedom from religion? What can be said to be the fruit of those who are openly atheists?

Comedians are good examples:

It’s all about sex, and money.

Don’t trust anybody. They are all out to take advantage of you. Trust me.

Everything’s dysfunctional. You can blame most of that on religion and rules.

Don’t worry about your teenage kids getting pregnant. They’re going to have sex whether you like it or not. Deal with it. They can always get an abortion.

Religion has nothing good to say about how to live. Never has. It’s a power trip.

You’re gonna die so get lots of sex and money, and junk. That’s all you really got to live for anyway.

Nothin happens after you die. Nothin.

Religion is tearing the world apart. It’s problem number one.

Me? All I got to say is do your own thing, I’ll do my own thing, and maybe, on occasion, we can do something together.

I saw the following on a web site: “Embrace the darkness, it needs a hug!”

Kick out the darkness and embrace the light.

Who is offering you hope? Real hope that you can put into action? Not these people.

Their words tell of a world filled with dysfunction, and why fight it? Just join right in. Husband a pain? Divorce him, everybody else is. It’s too hard to work things out.

Solutions are not in their playbook. You will be victimized all your life so party while you can, look out for number one, and get lots of stuff.

Better yet, get an addiction. Booze, porn, illegal drugs. And don’t worry about solving that problem either. As John Lennon and Yoko Ono sang: “Whatever gets you through the night, It’s all right, all right. Be it wrong or be it right, It’s all right, all right.”

Does anyone see the contradiction there? Good or bad is all right.

I think anyone who has worked hard to achieve something knows that it is not easy. That sacrifices need to be made to reach a goal. That discipline and hard work are required. That you worried along the way that you might not be up to the task. But you had hope.

Hope. I encourage everyone reading this to have hope. To be willing to take a chance not just on yourself but with others. To have hope that your life, however imperfect, is working toward the functional and not the dysfunctional. That you can build trust between yourself and others. To realize that those people I mentioned are not sending you messages of hope. That they are painting in your mind a dysfunctional image of the world that is not going to get better. That you can only see yourself as a victim. And that you cannot trust anyone around you. Not your kids, not your wife or husband.

By setting your mind and your heart on hope, and acting on it, you will have a chance. A chance to turn things around for yourself and the people around you. We are meant to care for others. To have friends. To try to help those having problems. This leads to healthier communities and healthier minds.

I encourage you. Avoid the profane, the dysfunctional, the addictions. The strip bar only cares about your money. But it will distort you. The dysfunctional entertainment you watch will distort you. It is nothing more than spending hours meditating on the bad, the evil, the violent and the dysfunctional. There is no hope there.

Find the source of hope. Think on those things that have some virtue. Don’t add yourself to the problems you see around you. Overcome them as best you can.

God bless,
Ed

More **** demonization of non-Christian, so all I’ve got to say on this is nothing nice.

I’m personally sick of it.

I’m also sick of the attitude of “gee I’m a victim and it’s happening to nobody else!”.

If it weren’t for atheists, science would never have progressed to the point there is now since all religion has ever done is stifle scientific and cultural progress. Those who dare spoke out were branded as heretics and or witches. In the past many are burned, but now they are ostracized and made into monsters when they aren’t

But people sure do enjoy hating people who are not like them. It’s the popular thing to do and since everybody does it to everybody else that makes it okay.

It’s very disheartening to see that people simply refuse to learn to live with people they can’t understand.

No. Like all religions, it offers a lens through which we see reality.

Unlike most religions, it offers a very self-centered one. At least, that’s how I see it through my own lens. 😉
I don’t think atheism qualifies as a religion. A religion is a set of beliefs and/or practices involving some type of supernatural reality or power. Atheism is simply the lack of belief in a god.

For the record, I’m not, strictly speaking, an atheist. I admit the possibility, however remote, that there is a god even though I consider the chances of certain gods being real to be infinitesimal.

The OP is obviously an angry, bitter man. The evils he laments have existed as long as people have walked the earth. Atheists didn’t invent these things.

Well, I didn’t mean to call it a religion. I meant that in a certain sense it’s similar to all religions. “Like religions” would probably have been a better way to put it.

Amen.

Really, atheists are the only people in America you can get away with discriminating against and be viewed as totally civilized. Racism anymore is portrayed in a negative light, as is anti-seminism, but atheist discrimination is not.

Edwest, was that a spam post? Were you just trying to get a rise out of this board? Many atheists have offered a great deal to the world, just as have many Christians, Muslims, Jews, etc. They do not all promote the evils that you listed in your initial post. Why would you even feel the need to bash them in such a way? It is discrimination, and it needs to stop. I know an atheist who is an extremely hard worker and who offers help to those around him. Please stop the immature, presumptuous posts.

What atheism offers society:

Delusion
Falsehood
Self-centeredness
Victimhood
Sin
Hatred
Intolerance
Fear

HOWEVER, atheists aren’t the same as atheism. There are many good people in the world who do not believe in God.

Psalms 145:20
“The LORD preserveth all them that love him
but all the wicked will he destroy”

What does the atheist offer society ?

simply, a reality check to all religions.

If you did some research into history, you would see that religion and science have not always been opposed. Google genetics or Albertus Magnus for starters. Where science and religion have butted heads, prior to the post-enlightenment era, is when one group tried to alter the teachings of the other. And, so you will know, it was a two way street.

Modern times is different. Science and religion coexest perfectly well in Catholicism. However, fundamentalists and evangelicals tend to have issues with it.

Not true at all. It was religion or rather, the Church that made some crucial observations in the history of science. Without the Church’s contributions to science, Atheists would still be in the dark. Like it or not, not all Christians are as gullible as militant Atheism loves to portray. A Christian also uses empirical observations as means of discovering things about the world, and attempts to provide plausible naturalistic explanations for the things he observes. He also wants to be as sure as he can so that his explanations correspond to the way the world really is, but unlike the Atheist, a Christian who wishes to fulfill the aims of science, but cannot give explanations known to science, is open to some degree to supernatural explanations. A believer’s mind is not fixated.

I have to disagree here, not all but some very loud atheists do regard their non belief as a religion. These are the ones that are the most anti-Christian and in fact, I would even go as far as classifying science as their religion.

This would make you more of an agnostic wouldn’t it?

While I agree that evil has existed since the beginning of time, I fully believe that there are people who do the evil things he laments in the name of atheism. I do not however believe that these people are the majority or even the majority of non-Christians. It is hard sometimes in this very secularized society to differentiate those who fully believe there is no God with those who do this evil in the name of Atheism. KWIM?
