This is what I find most of the time. Like Josie who tries to avoid or skip past the travesties in the OT because I feel that she knows that those things are be wrong. Either it is the word of god or it is not. If it is, then all that is written must be followed and believed by christians. The fact that most do not think that killing family members and genocide and slavery are acceptable shows that morals are not gained from the bible, but from an advancing society.
The Word of God is Jesus Christ. Scripture reveals the Word of God, which is why it is called the ‘inspired Word of God’. What that means is that a Biblical interpretation that excludes the premise of Jesus being the Messiah is, by definition, not Christian. So you can quote all the murder and mayhem you want, but you are not defining what a Christian believes by doing so.

As for morality evolving because of an advancing society, perhaps we could skim the last century of history and reflect on whether technology has made us more virtuous or not. I’m sure that in a couple thousand years, people will look back at our time period and think that we were barbarians. They will also look at themselves and reflect on how progressive they are.

This expresses the point of having an objective Truth that does not change according to what century it is. All generations are judged according to the same measure and not the one they define for themselves.
Saying we should just focus on the NT is not consistent. In that case where does original sin come into play? why then is the story of creation still told? the list goes on. the books go hand in hand, but again, the threat of eternal pain is enough for me to not teach the NT to my children.
Considering your interpretation of the Bible, I would hope that you wouldn’t teach that to your children. I would guess that you would teach your kids that they have the ability to think for themselves and make their own choices. Also, that there are consequences to their choices and that they are responsible for their actions. They can blame you or God or whomever, but the truth is that it is up to them.

This is what the Bible and Christianity teaches about God and our relationship to Him. That we each can think for ourselves and make our own choices, there are consequences to those choices and that you are ultimately responsible for the choices you make.

p.s. I don’t get you people, be happy and move on.
Actually i am happy to see someone comeout of the dark and see the light, for want of a better word it great to see someone that has truly been “saved”. You should open your mind as to why someone can let go of dogma and still find it in their heart to come here and try to help you.

I on the other hand come to such sites to defend knowledge from the claws of YEC’s and in doing to i also get some stimulating chat from the more educated members of the community.

So you do pick and choose which parts of the bible to follow and teach? Or do you just follow what your particular faith tells you to follow? We agree that there are good stories in the bible, but you can look past the horrors and I cannot, simple as that.
Also, there is nothing wrong with educating children on the importance of safe sex in my opinion. The more educated they are on any matter then the more chance they will have in making the correct decision.
When Jesus conquered death and sin we were no longer beholden to the Mosaic laws that is why the Judaizers were criticized by St. Paul (as a ex-Catholic you should know this). The Bible furthermore is made of stories some of which are real and some of which is allegorical. The laws that the Jews lived by were necessary for the times because of how barbaric and sinful society was back then. If you knew of the cultural historical background of many of the peoples mentioned in the Bible you would understand why in some instances war was necessary.

Well I afraid that some christains do think that homosexuality is a mortal sin precisely becasue of what it says in the bible.
I agree with most of the 2nd section. I will teach them to think for themselves and will not label them as christian or part of any other religion until they are old enough to decide by themselves. I am glad we agree on that. They will know there as consequences for their actions, but those consequences will not be from any god.

Hmmm, I seem to remember you asking me questions. If it bothers you, then ignore or do not read my posts. Problem solved.
Yes I did ask a question, after you implied that the Bible was not suitable to teach morals.

If you have to “defend” evolution than go to a Fundamentalist/evangelical website Catholicism doesn’t teach YEC. Honestly, how ignorant can you be of our faith?

p.s. I’m sooo happy that she/he came out of the dark, but ask me if I care?

I thought we had moved past this. I do not think the bible is moral, and you do. I think we are agreed on that.

Are you really trying to equate teaching children sex education at school with imposing religious dogma on them since birth?
No. You mentioned children, not infants. Aside from that, how does one impose any dogma on “them since birth?” The only thing an infant can be indocrinated with is food, caring for their physical needs and nurturing.
Oh and if you teach them condoms are immoral guess what? They just wont use them, where would that get us?
And if you teach them condoms are moral, where does that get us?
More than half of women obtaining abortions in 2000 (54%) had been using a contraceptive method during the month they became pregnant (Table 1). This figure is slightly lower than the proportion of women having abortions in 1994 who had been contraceptive users (58%),7 but slightly higher than the proportion reported in 1987 (51%).8 In 2000, approximately 15% of women had been using the most effective methods—1% used long-acting methods (sterilization, the IUD, implants or injectables) and 14% the pill. Twenty-eight percent of all women having abortions had used the male condom, down from 32% in 1994 (the only method to decline by more than three percentage points).
Source.

The number one predictor for contracting an STD is having multiple sexual partners. The number of sexual partners rises for those who begin sexual activity before 15 years of age. Of those, most have been taught how to use a condom by the 8th grade.

Where does your morality, and that of Planned Parenthood, SIECUS and Playboy get us?

All my best . . .

It makes no difference if you care or not. I wasn’t trying to make you care, I was simply answering your question.
No you don’t get it why are you here (obviously it’s to tell us your point of view)?

You can, but I still don’t understand the motivation behind it, hence my statement to “move on”.
It is fine if you don’t understand it. I wont be ‘moving on’ because I choose not to, even at your request.

Hi Rinnie,

I will not be taking my kids to church. I will let them make up their own mind when they are old enourgh to make the choice for themselves. If they want to follow a god then they can decide which one, it will not be forced upon them. I personally dont think I could ever say that if they do not accept jesus, then they will burn in hell forever.
I agree that there is alot of good stories and morals in the bible, but it is the horrible stuff that is the issue. Let me give a scenario. Lets say i did raise my child as christian and told them to read the bible and follow it. Then lets say my son or daughter tells me that they are gay.
Do I then still love them and treat them the same, or do I follow the bible and stone them to death? If my child was to convert to islam, should I banish them from my house and tell them they will suffer for all eternity? No, of course not, and I dont think you would either.
I think we can raise our kids just fine with good morals without any god, christian or otherwise.
No My love you would explain to them the same as the POPE of the RCC explains. You love everyone and you LOVE the SINNER HATE the sin.

You really need to learn the Catholic faith before you condemn it. Where did the RCC ever condemn a gay person.

Let me do some home work for you since you do not seem to do it. The Pope said welcome them to the RCC and let them know God loves them. Let them know they are carrying a very heavy Cross. But they can indeed carry it with the HELP of CHRIST.

Christ died for all man. He loves them. Why don’t you check up on the RCC doctrine of Jesus Christ of the RCC and then get back to me on gays. God Bless you. Will wait for your reply.
