So if you believe that the OT is the word of god, then why aren’t you out killing
  • atheists, adulterers,
endorsing
  • rape for warring victors,
  • owning slaves,
  • roasting and eating human feces before a conquest, allowing your daughters to be sold to the sex trade and killing those who blaspheme?
These things (and much more bizzare things) are all condoned and commanded in the OT (some in the new as well) so why not?
I hope you don’t mind, I put your comments into bullet points

God gave the 10 commandments and when He did they were in force. Were those commandments followed perfectly? No. Does scripture only show people who followed God’s laws perfectly? No. But what about before the law is given?

before the law was given, sin was in the world. But sin is not taken into account when there is no law.[Rm 5:13]

The law was added so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more, [Rm 5:20]
  • When it says thou shall not kill, the official understanding is thou shall not murder. Did people in the OT kill? Yes. Are there times when it is permitted like self defense? Yes. Is murder okay? No
  • Slavery was not condemned. In its greater context, sin is considered slavery. If one is free from sin they are free from the slavery of it. How many people can say they are not a slave to sin and that sin is not their master?
  • Is adultery permitted? No. It’s condemned. Did OT people comit this sin? Yes.
As to your comment about eating feces before a conquest

(emphasis mine]

Eat the food as you would a barley cake; bake it in the sight of the people, using human excrement *for fuel."*Ez 4:12]

“Very well,” he said, “I will let you bake your bread over cow manure instead of human excrement.” [Ez 4:15]

Unless you have a reference to support your position, they used it as fuel.

What does it matter to you if what two consenting adults do in the privacy of their own homes? How does it change your marriage to have two loving people continue their relationship within the confines of the institution of marriage. No one says that CHURCHES have to marry gay people, only that they be allowed to BE married. They can get married by the state or city.

Why is god so involved in the sex lives of people?

peace
Today I put before you life and death blessings and curses, choose life [Deut 30:19]

Bottomline, it’s all a matter of choice. In EVERYTHING you can choose to do it God’s way or choose do things your way. Both have consequences. Do a cost benefit analysis.

ooooooooo

believe in my ancient mythology or you will die (heck of a choice )

My cost benefit analysis says it’s all a collection of ancient myths that for whatever reason some of us still waste our time with.

Regardless of belief everyone dies in the flesh. .

Your soul is the energy of life. Your soul is immortal. It will live forever. Even for the atheist. Your soul is not some disembodied spirit. It has memory, intellect and will. Those are the properties of the soul. As soon as we take your last breath, everyone will know exactly their fate and where they will spend eternity. You will be fully aware of EVERYTHING. It’s NOT lights out for all eternity. It’s NOT as if you never existed. It’s NOT the end of existence as atheists would think will happen.

The only reason we know ANY of this is because the one who created all things revealed it to us. Otherwise you’re correct.

As Paul put it

If Jesus didn’t rise from the dead we are all dead in our sins so eat drink and be merry for tomorrow we die.

1 Cor 15:

14* if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. 15 We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified of God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. 16 For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised. 17 If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. 18* Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. 19 If for this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all men most to be pitied. 20 But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21* For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. 22* For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. 23* But each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ. 24 Then comes the end, when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every rule and every authority and power. 25* For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy to be destroyed is death. 27* “For God * has put all things in subjection under his feet.” But when it says, “All things are put in subjection under him,” it is plain that he is excepted who put all things under him. 28* When all things are subjected to him, then the Son himself will also be subjected to him who put all things under him, that God may be everything to every one. 29 Otherwise, what do people mean by being baptized on behalf of the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why are people baptized on their behalf? 30* Why am I in peril every hour? 31* I protest, brethren, by my pride in you which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die every day! 32* What do I gain if, humanly speaking, I fought with beasts at Ephesus? If the dead are not raised, "Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die

My cost benefit analysis says you are still trying to convince yourself that it’s a “collection of ancient myths”. Otherwise you wouldn’t keep coming back, still wasting your time.

I admit that was a dumb comment (on my part) … but not my reasoning at all (at least consciously). I love history (particularly western history), and I hate to see it distorted by the religious (particularly the CC). I’m also interested in understanding what lies behind religiosity and what drives human opinion.
