Have you heard about this? I read about this yesterday and blogged about it today at acts17verse28.blogspot.com. I think we have somve Brits on the board here. Have you guys been seeing these buses yet? Evidently some atheists are paying to plaster the slogan “There’s probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life” on public buses in London with plans to spread out from there.

The maddening thing is that here in the U.S., we couldn’t put Christian slogans on buses, but would probably be allowed to participate in the Atheist Bus Campaign.

How sad.
 
In advertising there’s that old adage: there is no such thing as bad press. That atheist campaign is probably doing more to get people thinking about God. Secularism and materialism are the big enemy. We’ve always had atheists and I don’t see anything wrong with them expressing their right to free speech. I’d rather have this debate out in the open than watch a society of people distracted to the point of apathy.

I appreciate your point of view, but must respectfully disagree when free speech is permitted to atheists but not to Christians. Unfortunately, that’s far too common in our country. Not sure how it is in Canada.

Yeah, the buses are here in the UK, but not nationwide, just in London and a few other cities. The thing about free speech is not balanced because you are expected to keep your Christian beliefs to yourself. a few stories of nurses getting fired for sharing their faith with sick patients have sprung up here and there and any such thing as a crucifix is frowned upon in public offices. So free speecg and expression appears to be lop-sided.
Back to matter at hand, the good things is that a counter campaign has been launched in the UK. A few buses are now carrying the billboard, ‘‘Only a fool says in his heart, there is no God’’ Psalm 14:1.

I hope the campaign doesn’t spread to our country, but I’m betting some folks hostile to the faith will be glad to throw their money away on this sort of trash.
It’s hard to believe that our financial crisis is as bad as they way when people are willing to pay for empty slogans such as this.

The organisers generated more than five times the amount of money they were trying to raise for the billboard campaign. This was hailed as some sort of victory over religious faiths, especially Christianity. It was really just a reflection of how much comtempt some people have for beliefs such as ours because they don’t want to submit to any sort of authority other than the law of the land, which can be twisted this way and that and allows them liberties as long as they pay taxes and obey ‘‘man made’’ laws.

l know a few atheists (not representative of all atheists) and they are proud and defiant, totally rejecting the idea of a God who has dominion over their lives and who they have to answer to.

lt’s all very sad. Trying to reason with these acquaintances of mine usually come to a stand still when l pose the question thry can reason out;
" Could Romeo, Juliet, Othello or Macbeth prove Shakespeare existed?"
 
I couldn’t help but notice when all this came about last year, though, that the words were **‘probably **no God’ - even hard core atheists still couldn’t bring themselves to say ‘definitely’ 😃

You are confusing Freedom of Speech with the Establishment clause. The Establishment Clause states is explained by the famous “Wall of Separation” wherein a government entity “shall shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof”. usconstitution.net/const.html#Am1

Freedom of speech, in this case is something different. If a private citizen wants to pay a bus company for advertising, then the US government can’t interfere. Just in the same way that we have all those “God Said it” billboards around the South.

I always wonder why athiests are so worried when Christians ‘threaten them with hell and damnation’ – surely the point of being an athiest means you don’t believe in these things – how then can they feel ‘threatened’ by them? It would be like me feeling ‘worried’ after watching the War of the World film and feeling ‘threatened’ when I don’t even believe in aliens !

i guess it can go both ways, when you are attacked, you counterattack. humans have been doing that to each other forever.

I agree with you that the current sentiment in Western nations is to discriminate against religion (Catholicism in particular). What I hope comes out of this atheist campaign is a dialogue or debate about God. I’m not as concerned about the atheists as the majority of people in Western nations that are apathetic about God and their souls. “There’s probably no God?” Bring this debate on. Please. Let’s duke it out in a public forum and wake the apathetic out of their secular slumber.
