Atheist prayer question

Hello all sorry if my posts are too frequent. I posted about struggling in life and received many helpful answers. I have a different question for you. I am encouraged highly to attend Eucharistic adoration and to pray the rosary but isn’t prayer not useful if you are in a state of mortal sin? Since I was raised Catholic and fell away through my own wants of the flesh does that not mean there’s no point until I receive reconciliation? Also though I truly don’t know what I believe but I’m committed to spending a year under the assumption of gods existence. I already have gotten rid of a few temptations I fell to regularly. I have a faith trip setup for Washington DC to see the cathedrals and the huge monistary and hopefully be able to discuss my crisis with someone there.

The shortened version since I panic write long paragraphs: I chose to leave gods presence and to embrace pleasures of the flesh does that mean my prayer is pointless until I receive confession?
 
Prayer is always useful. Indeed, for many who fell away and later returned, the graces they needed to come back came from prayer. Always pray, most of all when it’s hard.
 
Prayer is always useful as it is a way to actively continue to work through what ever you are dealing with.
Remember though, you don’t know more than the collective experience of the people around you. Ask them and talk to them. Having a mentor in life is always great to have.

I think I’m in a state of mortal sin right now… I’m married but not within the Catholic Church… I also unfortunately am still using birth control (stopping soon)

I pray the rosary a lot and just talk/pray to God in general. I’ve had my prayers answered. Things take time to change. Take baby steps, I’ll be praying for you. We are all sinners… God will forgive us if we are truly sorry and trying hard to stop repeating our sins!
 
Remember the old saying; “A sinner on his knees sees more than the philosopher on his tiptoes.” Pray always; if you fail, admit your fault and ask God for forgiveness and repent of the action. You can seek (and I believe gain God’s forgiveness without the sacrament of Reconciliation. If you couldn’t there would be a whole lot of non-Catholics in a whole lot of trouble. And loves all His people.
 
I am agnostic and I pray all the time. I like to think someone is listening and responding because things always turn out pretty well for me.

Keep praying regardless of where you are in your spiritual journey. It is all good.
