What I’d like to know is why atheists visit Catholic forums?

I’d especially like to hear from atheists before the Catholics answer … if that’s possible

Not Catholic and not Atheist but IMO could it be that they are trying to find something that is missing in their lives?

Well, they would probably answer that there is nothing to miss.

yes that they could…but then perhaps they dont want to admit yet to the world that they are wrong and something is missing.

If I was an Atheist (which I have been in the past) and believed that when I die, that’s it… end of story, no more me… just eternal sleep with no awareness of anything then I know that I would have at least a little bit of hope for something more, some call themself Atheist even though deep down they hope or believe there is a God, a creator of all things… it’s not only a feeling of hope but it is also logical to believe in a creator when you can witness your own existance and see a system of design in the universe. They are most likely here to find answers which will increase their reason for hope. I pray that they do find God.

*They are most likely here to find answers which will increase their reason for hope.*Very possibly, though I’ve never heard one admit to that.

Actually, I’m here to try to understand Catholics. I was raised Catholic but got away from the religion as soon as I could move away from my parents. Lived a good life. But now my mom is gone. And my dad is becoming some sort of lay monk. One sister returned to Catholicism. And I still want to be able to talk to them. So I’m on line to learn the language and learn what Catholics are up to these days.

You’ve had experience with other such threads, I see. I’m not answering, I swear.👋

Starting to look like no atheists are comfortable with the question of this thread. I wonder why.

Mike’s answer here is not uncommon. I only remember seeing one that was arguementative. Most seem merely curious. There is a lot of misinformation on Catholics out there.

Chalk down another one for “curiosity.” You guys have a mindset that is in a lot of ways almost totally alien to mine, and I find it interesting trying to wrap my head around it.

I can sympathize with your point of view. I have spent years trying to figure out what drove me to atheism in the first place and what brought me back to God in the end.

Believe it or not Sam, there is a lot of reason behind being a Catholic. By reason, I mean the logical conclusion of historical fact is that Jesus died and was resurrected, that He is indeed God, that He started a church and that church remains on Earth today, as the Catholic Church! Now as of right now I doubt you really believe me, but I really believe that if you look at the facts objectively, then the Catholic Church is the logical conclusion. I’ll let you do this work yourself, but if you would like me to give you a starting platform then I’d be happy to help. If you do decide to do some research into this problem, just be very careful over what people claim is fact! And yes, I include my post in this category! Have fun 🙂

The first time I came here was, when I stumbled over a thread filled with the common prejudices about atheists, like they have no morality, are evil satanists, etc, which compelled me to answer to that.
And, like SamCA, I try to understand why Christians think what they think.
Besides I like a decent discussion, keeps the mind fresh and works.
Oh, before I forget, I did learn one or two things about Catholicism I didn’t know before, and there’s nothing wrong in learning stuff.

To learn something new each day(or most days) is a great thing!
I have never thought that atheists worshipped Satan, are immorral or other things that people may think…but I wonder and have to ask since you are the first atheist person I have come across…what is it that you do believe or what is it that atheists believe?

It varies from atheist to atheist, really. Beyond not believing in God, it’s hard to draw any real commonalities.

I have a hard time going along with you here. While I’m willing to accept the idea that there very likely was indeed a historical Jesus, it is extremely difficult to draw any solid conclusions about what he may or may not have done or said, let alone whether he was ressurected.

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. If all the gospels claimed was that a man named Jesus existed, he was very pious, and he began a Church, I’d be inclined to believe it, if only because it’s not very hard to believe. To believe he came back from the dead, or he’s God, or even that God exists in the first place, I need something more substantive than two thousand year old testimony. I have to side with my man Thomas – a claim that extraordinary, I’m not going to believe without extraordinary proof.
Now as of right now I doubt you really believe me, but I really believe that if you look at the facts objectively, then the Catholic Church is the logical conclusion.
Sure, but everyone thinks that about their own beliefs.

Sure. I’m always interested in that sort of thing. Not promising to agree with you or anything, but I wouldn’t be here if I wasn’t interested in reading the other side’s position.

Hi, the term “atheist” simply denotes a person *not *believing in God or in gods to be precise. Also most atheists deny the existence of any supernatural phenomena. Apart from that, atheists have no common attitude, philosophy or political agenda. Though most atheists probably want a strict separation of state and religion.
