Atheists: Should Atheism be protected by the first amendment?

And for those who don’t consider Atheism a religion, do you still believe it should be protected by the first amendment anyway?
 
Yes it should simply because it falls under the freedom of speech, however the rights of atheists should not override the rights of the practitioners of religious faiths. Remember the constitution nor the bill of rights says anything regarding the separation of church and state here is the exact wording of the First ammendment.

Atheism should definitely be protected on the basis of free speech, and it can be a religion (though isn’t always, or even usually, I’d say), so atheists who try to claim religion status should be granted it, assuming the usual requirements fall on them.
 
I screwed up on the poll and wrote should instead of shouldn’t on two of them. I’m sure you can figure it out.
 
For most, atheism is just a deliberate lack of religion, but some people do reject God with a zeal and dogma that sure resembles religion. But regardless of what it should be classified as, it is a belief, and should therefore be protected like any other. The problem is that lack of religion is often protected more diligently than any actual religion, and that is dangerous.
 
In the context of freedom of speech, yes.

I like to think of atheism as an anti-religion, i.e., a religion that is the opposite of and opponent to religion.
 
Atheism is not a belief, it’s a lack of a belief. To call atheism a religion would be like saying “not fishing” is a hobby.

And yes, it should be protected. I don’t know how anybody could deny this. Do you think Jesus would go around imprisoning people just because they lack faith in God?

That’s weak atheism. Strong atheism is the belief that God does not exist.

What would be daft & abusive, would be for an atheist to have a right in law to become a minister of religion. But then, it would be equally daft & abusive for a Muslim to have a right to become a member of a secularist organisation, or for a Catholic to have a right to become a rabbi. But that sort of daftness is what PRness confuses with equity towards all. :eek:
