I’m sure I committed a mortal sin today.

I turned my alarm clock off and went back to sleep because I didn’t want to get up to go to church. I’m not sure when exactly the real sin takes place: last night when I decided to not go to bed until 2:30 am, knowing I had to get up the next morning, or today when I refused to get up anyway.

Nevertheless, today I was going to go to the Church that my RCIA classes are at instead of the Baptist church I usually attend but I didn’t go to either.

I want to make up for this somehow by giving God back his time.

I noticed that some parishes in my city have weekday worship services. Are these the same as the mass that would be attended on a Sunday?

You are not a Catholic just now, therefore you have no obligation to assist at Mass. You should go but it is not entirely neccessary. You do not commit a mortal sin by not going.

Another thing…if you wish to enter into full communion with the Catholic Church, you really should not be attending a Baptist church service. Christ founded the Catholic Church, therefore if you believe her to be the true religion of God, you must abandon the Baptist community’s errors and heresies.

May God continue to bless you on your journey of faith, and may the Holy Mother lead you to her Son.

Sunday’s not over yet. Find a parish in your area that has a Sunday evening Mass and go to that one.

Right, I don’t have an obligation to go to the mass yet, but I should be “keeping holy” the Lord’s day. Even though I have not been Baptized yet and would certainly not be going to confession or anything like that, I do definitely believe in mortal vs venial sin. In fact I would go so far as to say that is the first thing that God revealed to me on my journey.

So I’m caught in a somewhere in between zone. Someone from my church would say not to worry about it and just go next week. But I feel like I have more of a responsibility because of what has been shown to me over the last couple of months.

So I guess my real question is if those weekday mass days would be appropriate?

Easy now, just as many Protestants misunderstand the Catholic church, many catholics likewise don’t exactly understand all Protestant churches. I do believe we have errors, which is why I am enrolled in RCIA now, but we do the best we can with what he have and know.

Also, I am only 1 month into RCIA, and I spoke with the coordinator and she said that the process that I’m going through shouldn’t be rushed, and she confirmed that I am not sabotaging it in any way by still attending my old Church on Sundays.

I totally hear what you’re saying though, but I think it should happen in stages and not over night maybe?

If you feel an urge to go to a weekday mass, then do so, with fixing a mistake you never committed, that’s another story, you can’t do it through your own means, what is done, is done and I feel, your attending a weekday mass is purely to ease your concience, it should be for that real desire to attend, not an attempt to attone.

The more you attend mass, the more you learn of the value and what goes on during mass, the more you will take the protestant services more lightly as to their validity, and a slow exodus away from them is not bad, just stay on your toes, for you are going to learn things that Catholic church supports and believe, that the baptists do not and will eventually be forced to choose which side of the fence you want to be on with them. The warning that was expressed was to help clear obsticals from your path while you study the Catholic faith, it’s more in line with helping you not having to get side tracked with contradictory teachings and I doubt, was referencing the validity of that church.

What you’ll find in the end, that even though much of the messages are very good with your baptist church, you will see that it’s lacking the fullness you experience as a Catholic, kind of like, the service missed out, or omitted a significant portion that we as Catholics get to experience with ours.

I can’t determine whether you committed a mortal sin, but you aren’t obligated by church law to attend mass yet so there is no mortal sin of disobedience to church law. You knew you should keep holy the Lord’s day. Because of human weakness, you didn’t gather with other believers to worship God this morning.

Since today is not over, think how you could please the Lord and keep the day holy. Is an evening mass available to you? Could you read today’s scriptures from the mass and reflect on them? Go here http://www.wordonfire.org/WOF-Radio/Sermons/2009/Sermon-459-Called-From-Darkness-into-His-Light.aspx to listen to an excellent homily on today’s gospel. Maybe you could even get together with a friend to do this.

Of course you should pray - prayers you have memorized, written prayers, the rosary, or just in your own words praise and thank God, tell him you are sorry for your sins and ask forgiveness, ask him for the needs of yourself and others.

I think going to a daily mass would be an excellent way to ‘give God back his time’ and to show that you are sorry you didn’t get up for morning worship. But you don’t have to do that to get God’s forgiveness. Do it just because you love him.

Daily mass is like Sunday mass except it’s usually somewhat shorter. There’s only one reading in addition to the gospel instead of two and a few prayers may be omitted. Often there’s no singing. Many Catholics go to mass every day. It’s a wonderful way to get closer to the Lord.

Friend are you aware of the three conditions necessary for an act to be a “Mortal Sin”?

Serious matter … missing Obligatory Mass is a serious matter
Knowledge before commiting the act that it is a mortal sin
Desire to do it anyway

If I understand you correctly you are not yet a Catholic? Therefore it is questionable if you are held to these standards yet? Having said that, have you made your first Confession yet? If so do so again ASAP.

I would suggest two things. Try to attend a daily Mass wich is similar, but with a much shorter homily [talk] than on Sunday. In case of TRUE necessity which does not seem to be present as you related the facts, daily Mass can off set the Sunday Obligation. This is the exception, not the rule.

Friend it is Extremely Important that you develope Good Spiritual habits and practices NOW, so when you convert, everything will come easier for you:)

Love and prayers,

Pat

You should also discuss this with a priest at the earliest possible opportunity.

Homilies are in fact optional at daily Mass. My priest rarely has a homily at daily Mass but they usually have it at the Cathedral.

I am familiar with protestantism as I used to be one of them.

When your love for the Blessed Sacrament and the Sacrifice of the Mass deepens, you will not ever wish to worship in a protestant church again.

As long as it happens before the Rite of Acceptance, you’re good. 🙂

Jesus be with you.

I am a convert, you will have to fight, i am sorry hon, but you got to fight for what you want. They will not let you go by choice, that is just the way it is.

If you want to convert you will have to fight. Now this is the nasty side of Catholic/protestant relations, this is where the dealing gets dirty. Jesus protect you, Jesus be with you, Jesus…

You not waking up to go to mass, you missing RCIA, Don’t worry, I had to fight my way
all the way to the front door of the Roman Catholic Church. Oh it drives Preachers bonkers you trying to do what you are trying to do, they know better then you… It drives the preachermen nuts what you are trying.

I have seen it I have dealt with it, that week feeling that comes over you, that not wanting to go. I have seen it, I have dealt with it. It is hard.

This is the hardest part about becomming Catholic, because of the Way the Catholic Church is constructed you got a 8 months, but you only got 6 more to go… God Bless you, Oh I could weep for you, I know I know I know…

No that preachermans fish flopped out of his basket and is running headlong for that Priests Krill… It happens it do, I grew up in the middle of a Babtist town, with non-attentive presbytarian parents, and I chose to become Catholic, I got caught by a fallen away Catholic family, living in that same Babtist town. The odds of me becomming Catholic were astronomically small.

No being in RCIA is Emmitt Smiths last 4 yards, they are always the hardest. It so so rough for me the night before I was babtised, oh my gosh it was touch, i was being mentally beat senseless…

No man, you are escaping a Matrix NEO… The Agents are there… So get your shades on… This is where you learn that Catholic / Protestant relations are still in the 1500’s.

Ben walks into the building, Opens his coat… GUNS Line the insides of his trench coat.

I know its hard bud, Ben says dumping two mags from Mini-uzi’s at two preachermen as they run for cover.

You make a break for the MASS next Sunday, and you keep going. I get paid by the Vatican to do this…

And then when you are Catholic and you see that same person languishing between two church , who wants to become Catholic is in RCIA and for some reason can’t get to
RCIA, You perform this favor for them because it you will come across yourself.

It is tough being a convert.

Love you,
Your future Brother in Christ,
Benjamin

Here is a Name, Mother Mary Jude, she is a Nun in Rome, everytime it gets hard I want you to think about her. Bless you.

Such is the right of the priest. However the Word of God is essential to salvation. Why a priest would opt not to teach for at least a few moments, is a lost opportunity.

Our dialy masses with about 100 people in attendance last about 30 minutes, including a daily reflection of the Divine Word of God.

Love and prayers,

I always attend Sunday Mass, but as a dad and a frequent usher/minister of hospitality I sometimes feel I was not there spiritually. I will often attend Mass Monday morning to “make up” for it. If I am having a hard day/week, I will attend daily Mass to be fed. I feel so bad for Protestant friends that do not have this option open to them.
