Attended a TLM for the first time today

Some people have taken Novus Ordo as a slur, but that’s the name it was propagated with: Novus Ordo Missae. I don’t think it was intended as a slur. The poster probably should have used OF - Ordinary Form, NO - Novus Ordo. Ah well, we’re all just human. Miserere nobis.

I don’t think anyone means it as a slur. NO is simply the first letters of those two words.

You are mistaken. It is the Mass of Pope Paul VI. Colloquially it’s the “Pauline Mass” and according to Pope Benedict XVI The Ordinary Form (OF) of the Mass.

At this point in history those using NO/Novus Ordo are just trying to denigrate the OF Mass. That’s crystal clear to me.

This was a remarkable example. The poster remembered the EF part but not the OF part of the Pope’s instructions. Very clear indeed.

40 years - that’s a drop in the bucket compared to 2,000 years of Church history. That Mass is still a baby by a long shot.

“Novus Ordo” and particularly your “NO” comment are inceasingly viewed as slurs. You got the EF part right. Stunning you missed the OF part. Then again, maybe it’s not stunning.

Interesting that my Pastor who does both forms commented in his sermon at the EF, “At the Novus Ordo mass today, we read…”

To be honest, I neither like EF or OF. I would prefer to say TLM anytime.
 
I hate to be the jerk who throws this in but I think it’s time:

“Remind people of these things and charge them before God to stop disputing about words. This serves no useful purpose since it harms those who listen.” (2 Timothy 2:14)

Ha ha. Good one.

I really don’t see what is derogatory. Is it derogatory to call the EF, the old mass? No, because it is the older form out of the two.

In any case, I think in time people will get used to saying ordinary form and extraordinary form.

But with this movement that is sweeping the church, the names may one day be switched around. 😃

Pope Benedict (or his assistants) coined EF and OF I am sure in part to get past the offensive monikers – offensive to different groups… “TLM” is not something the Church has ever used but some prefer it because it glorifies the Mass they happen to prefer. Principally the same people that also use “NO/novus ordo.”

Two weeks ago I was chatting with some other guys after liturgy. Someone asked me something about the “Enn Ohh” Mass. I said as nicely as I could that I had no idea what he was talking about. Then he came out with “novus ordo.” I said “are you asking me about the Ordinary Form of the Mass? The Pauline Mass?” Immediately his jaw clenched and I walked away. I shouldn’t have even acknoledged he asked an “Enn Ohh” question.

That’s beautiful. I think that’s exactly what Pope Benedict did when he coined OF and EF Masses.

It’s remarkable to watch people use “NO” and “novus ordo” when it offends an ever growing number of fellow Catholic Christians. That is 100%, squarely on them.

How do the words “traditional” and “latin” glorify anything? They are purely descriptive.

Don’t get so worked up about the novus ordo Mass. After all, Cardinal Koch has informed us that the Pope wants it to go away and be replaced by a hybrid Mass so, if you’re a young person, you’ll probably outlive it anyway.
 
The pastor of my Eastern Catholic parish [a self-described (and I quote) “traddie”] said that "traddies don’t like “Extrordinary Form” because it sounds too much like “extraordinary minister.”

I remember intently trying to hear the Twilight Zone signature piece as he was saying that. Sorta gave me the willies.

Which sounds better, Missa Hybrida? Or Semivetus Seminovusque Missa? 🙂
