The people should be participating in the singing, but in my experience the degree of actual participation depends greatly on the parish. In the different Ruthenian parishes I’ve attended I’ve seen both extremes; parishes that have almost no one singing with the choir and those that the congregation is singing with such enthusiasm that the choir almost can’t be heard. I’d say somewhere in the middle is more typical though.
This one was about in the middle.

From my limited experience there is a continuum of BC Churches which are trying to become what God has given us to be. St. Elias in Brampton Ontario is one and Annunciation in Homer Glen is another that seem to be leading the way. Some parishes are doing marvelous work in some areas and others are in others. A few are having a very difficult time ajusting to the fact that we are actually Eastern Catholic Churches.

We have 12 cantors. Three men pursuing the diaconate and one or two others who are contemplating it. We usually have between 8 and 12 altar boys and a few of us men step forward from time to time. Our choir has 18-20 members and limits itself to singing once or twice a month but is frequently invited to occasions as far away as Minnesota and Pennsylvania. Father is a national leader in the Theology of the Body. Three of our woman are developing a new order of celibate nuns. Our property regularly wins city, state, and national awards for conservation and beauty. We broadcast two radio programs. We give regularly to Crisis Pregnancy centers and ocassionally conduct Mission fairs. We have visitors every Sunday and often as many as 25 visitors on a given Sunday. I could go on, but I think you get the point.

Too bad I don’t live around there.
Perhaps you have mentioned it before but from what part of the country do you hail? The Midwest is flat but Chicago is interesting. Why not plan a vacation which includes a trip to Annunciation? I’ll show you around.
