Attending Funerals for Strangers

I found this interesting from the article.

“ Attending the funeral of someone you don’t know is a lonely experience. ”

I don’t feel that way. I think it is easier to focus on the mass when it is not a loved one. It is easier to meditate on the thought “memento mori” when at a mass for someone you do not know. And it is good to think about that often.

Our priest told us it is good to attend funeral masses for people we don’t know. It is a work of mercy, but also, it makes us realize that we all will die someday.
 
My former parish had, among a host of various lay activities, one which involved simply attending funerals of deceased parishioners. Many elderly parishioners may have few remaining relatives, and their funerals are sparsely attended. This helped ensure that other parishioners were there for their last visit to church.
