Attending mass in a state of mortal sin

Hi, A few hours ago I committed a mortal sin and I feel very bad about it, I am planning on going to confession on Saturday. I know I can not receive communion until After I have confessed but I was wondering If I attend mass Tommrow will Receive any graces from it?
I wasn’t going to go at first worried of what people might think of me not going up to receive but then I realized it would be better to go to mass.

You can always get up during Communion and get a blessing from the Priest. That is what I have done, and it feels better than to not go up at all. God be with you!

When someone asked s. Padre Pio if there were any benefits in simply hearing Mass, he replied: “they cannot be enumerated…you will see them in heaven”.

Focus on what God thinks, and God alone. You are who you are in the eyes of God. If people compliment you, that does not make you more of what you are in God’s eyes. If people criticize you, that does not make you any less than you are in God’s eyes.

Perfect contrition united to the desire to confess as soon as possible, the Church teaches, suffice to obtain remission of mortal sin and restoration of sanctifying grace. While you are not properly disposed to receive Communion until after confession, do not necessarily consider yourself in a state of mortal sin…rather, as St. Joan of Arc, hope to be in the state of grace and pray: “If I am not, may God put me there; and if I am, may God so keep me.”. A safe path to kindle that hope are the words I once saw engraved on the wall of an Adoration Chapel: “live with a penitent heart”.

May the Lord strengthen you to keep your body under discipline and run as to win the race!

Thank you for this. I am also a person who can not take communion right now and struggle with the shame surrounding that. I love to attend mass though and do not want to miss it because it fulfills me in so many ways.

There should be no shame in not receiving when you feel you’re not properly disposed. People should not judge you for staying in your seat during communion time. They shouldn’t be gloating or telling you how much you’re missing either.

I feel a lot of people deprive themselves of Mass benefits because they feel ashamed at not participating in communion with the others. Especially true in the Anglophone communities, not so much in the Spanish or Polish congregations where Mass is an important part of their lives and half do not approach the altar and of those that do, many just get the priest’s or deacon’s blessing.

First off, no one should be judging you for not receiving. Receiving the Eucharist is not a social event, and you don’t need to receive the Eucharist at a Mass in order to fully participate in it. There are many Catholics today who are judgmental, and I sympathize with you if you have encountered any.

If you attempt to make perfect contrition, and aren’t able to go to Confession, then you will most certainly receive graces from the Mass.
