I’m astounded recently at the number of people who chew gum at Mass. I’m just wondering what people’s attitudes here are.
I don’t approve of chewing gum at masses or in court, in business meetings or other places where the people are expected to pay attention.

But I suppose its better than smoking at mass.

True, it’s not the biggest thing. However, it is a symptom of loss of respect for Christ, and loss of the sense of the sacred - this false idea of Christ, our buddy-buddy, or Christ our littlest playground companion, to whom we can do anything, and he has to grin and like us anyway in case we beat Him up; rather than Christ our Creator, who can blow us out like a candle any time He wants, but who graciously chooses instead to love us.

After all, if it wouldn’t occur to you to show disrespect towards your grade school teacher by chewing gum in her class, then why would you chew gum in front of the Tabernacle of Jesus Christ, our greatest Teacher?
WHAT? I didn’t say that I chew gum at mass as a matter of fact I do not, but to get so bent out of shape over gum chewing. If you would condemn someone for chewing gum at mass where do you draw the line. You can do your best by leading by example.I don’t think that it is a loss of respect for Christ or the sacred, but of just not thinking . That is the reason that we should pray for the gum chewer that they may come to the conclusion for themselves that through Christ that we should reserve gum chewing for outside of church.Keep holy the Lords day…God Bless:)

I try not to worry too much about what others are or are not doing the way that they behave is between them and God. I’m trying to focus on being a good christian.I guess I am confused with the correlation you made between chewing gum and paying attention .God Bless you:)

Chewing gum activates the brain. Check out the study at

ezinearticles.com/?Forget-What-Your-Heard-in-School,-Chewing-Gum-Activates-Your-Brain&id=198507

Of course the study also says you can chew on a turkey leg and get the same effect…
Maybe everyone could just wait until the homily, get out whatever they choose to chomp on, then after the homily, get rid of whatever they were chomping on and mass could proceed.
Of course, then they would be in violation of the Communion Fast, if not in fact (like if they were chewing on kleenex or some other “non-food” item), then in spirit. 🤷

I would not chew gum during mass but far be it for me to judge ones that do. I think that with all that is going on in the world today that the Lord would be please with all who attend mass wether they are chewing gum to not. If you look back at the time of Jesus there was preaching going on during several meals. He feeds our spirit as well as our bodies… I’m just happy for that . He forgives us maybe we should pray for the ability to forgive us as in The Lords Prayer…AMEN:bowdown2:

Who is “judging” them? I am assuming that they are stupid (and thus, Heaven-bound no matter what they do, since they aren’t capable of deliberate sin) - I’m not saying that anybody is going to go to Hell. I’m just trying to wake the dead, or so it seems.

Yes, but if they are chewing gum, where is the evidence that they are at all aware of their surroundings, or that they even know that they are in a holy place?

So? I bet people didn’t show up to these dinners with food in their mouths already, did they?

Re chewing Kleenex or something - what a great idea - someone should invent a non-food that would be legal to chew/eat right up until Holy Communion, then those that are so orally fixated that they can’t survive 45 minutes without something in their mouths/stomachs wouldn’t have to be deprived.👍

One day back in 1953,i was going to communion on First Friday, just before school.I found a piece of chewing gum in my pocket and, forgetting i was about to receive communion, put it in my mouth.Within a minute i realised my mistake and took it out of my mouth.Since i had done it accidentally,i decided to go to
communion. However,it worried me and i confessed it.The priest
said,"you’re ten years old and you don’t know you shouldn’t receive communion if you have eaten something."Admittedly,i didn’t say i had done so accidentally, but then it never occurred to
him to ask a 10 year old if that was the case.About 10 years later,
that priest left the priesthood and got married.

Who’s say ? But I think that we’ve all wasted enough time on something so trival . Let’s us pray for all those Mass attending gum chewing
flock that they will realize the errors of their ways…AMEN

This is NOT something trivial. This goes to the heart of showing Our Lord and God respect during the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, the most sacred action in the entire world.

Let’s say you had committed a horrible, horrible crime, too horrible to be mentioned. Then, when it appeared you were about to be condemned, the President (or King, or whoever) decided not only to parden you, but also to adopt you as his son, and shower you with righeousness, show you what the right way is to live. In addition, this President is giving you his entire estate. You will be set for life, you will be awarded more glory and honor than you ever thought possible.

Now, imagine that the time comes for you to thank this President for turning your life around, for giving you a second chance. You go in, and start chewing gum, acting distracted, and don’t even seem to care what is going on. Would that be right?

Well, that is EXACTLY the attitude of someone who chews gum at mass. Our Lord has set us free, through His Passion, Death and Ressurection. He has made us ADOPTED CHILDREN OF THE FATHER, PARTAKERS IN THE DIVINE NATURE. And we DARE to chew gum at mass?

The argument that this is trivial, that there are more important things in the world, reflects the typcial socialist-liberal-secularist outlook on religion: it’s sole function is to help the poor and fight violence. While this is certainly important, it does not end there. Catholicism is about HONORING THE TRIUNE GOD, and it is exactly comments saying that chewing gum is “trivial” that reflect the attempts to secularize the Truth.

God will not be mocked.

Well then I see that you are very upset… sorry. But if you are going to get so upset to attack gum chewing the why not go for the ones that come to mass with the mid-section showing . I was at Easter Vigil last night and there was a girl there with her belly hangin out for all to see. Enough make-up on for at least 3 people. Now for the larger scale of things as wrong as chewing gum is where would you rank that? I not going to get so upset that i can’t seem to find forgiveness in my heart for people who choose to chew gum the whole flock as become very laxed as far as I can see I can only live as I should and pray for the one’s that I feel that are not respectful to the Lord . He will deal with them in due time I have found that if I give it over to the Lord it seems to all work out. I bless you for being so passionate. I guess we will have to lead by example…I’ll pray for you …Pray for me …truth is found though the Lord .May we all become more knowledgeable

Who says we don’t rail against these things, too? (Or haven’t you noticed those threads, yet?)

Anyway, if you think it’s so trivial, why did you revive this thread? It had been dead for several months, until you revived it again to tell us how unimportant it was. 😉

well I am new to the site and didn’t realize that I was a dead issue, but I will tell you I sure wish that I would have left it buried I will try not to make the same mistake again… Hope you had a wonderful Easter.I’m not trying to make lite of any issue. But maybe if we tackle the smaller ones the really large ones will take care of themselves. And no I guess I haven’t seen the thread that tackled the issue on dress and makeup don’t get me wrong I too wear make-up but some of these girls don’t know when enough is enough.I’ve always been told that is doesn’t matter what a person is wearing but what is their hearts that matters. I would like to think that the Lord knows that we don’t really mean to be so disrespectful. "the Spirit is strong but the flesh is weak"There are so many of us that go around trying to fit religion into our lives instead of letting our religion make our lives. We are pulled into so many directions that we run to church not giving much thought to as what we are wearing or that maybe we are “chewing gum” the young generation doesn’t stop to think before they do and maybe that is our fault to a certain degree . I can tell you that I was a lot easier on my children than my parents but then again I was raised by a grandmother . she was really strict. children didn’t speak unless spoken to.She could backhand you in the mouth before you knew what was coming.I guess we will just have to continue to pray for all of us to be stronger and to find the grace to love the Lord and show nothing but respect…My bedtime prayer has always been… Lord please bless me with a restfull nights sleep and please forgive me if I have done something or said something that has afended you.In the name of the Father , the Son and Holy spirit…AMEN:love:

It seems as if the meaningful conversation on gum chewing has reached its end. The thread is now closed. Thanks to all who participated.
