It has been mentioned before, and I repeat, that ALL German youth were required to belong to the appropriate groups. Such is the characteristic of a totalitarian regime.

He jumped ship the first chance he got.
That’s absolutely untrue. I know a few older Jews who were born in Weimar Germany. They jumped ship, and ended up here. The holy father went along, and got along.

This isn’t really an insult. I have to wonder what posterity will say about me, who is making money and enjoying life in George Bush’s America while we’re waging wars and violating international law in Guantanamo. It’s simply the unvarnished truth.

Really? You do? Care to share any of these?

Nothing in those articles contradicts anything I said, and nothing in them supports your contentions.

While I am at it, your assertions that Jesus never existed at all are also part of the realm of crackpots and tinfoil-hatters.
Sure. It’s a big conspiracy between me, MSNBC, and The Times (along with dozens and dozens of other journalists). The tinfoil hat comment is rather appropriate. LOL!

You have produced no evidence that shows that the Ratzingers were supporters of the Nazi regime.

No reputable or respected scholar of history or theology accepts the “Jesus did not exist” theory. That’s the fact, Jack.

You are like many ex-Mormons: convinced that all religion is a complete sham because of your prolonged exposure to one of the world’s weirdest cults. It has destroyed your objectivity as you replace the doctrines of the cult with nihilism. I am sorry for you and you have my prayers.

just to be fair, the only thing i am aware of regarding monson and honecker is that met him, shook his hand, gave him a token gift and thanked him for cooperating with the LDS church to get a temple built over there.

Wow! I just got excommunicated from the LDS church by an internet Catholic! I’m sure my bishop will be amused.

I’m not a nihilist. I’m a humanist.

As far as a historical Jesus goes, I have never asserted that “Jesus did not exist”. Educated people are comfortable with the fact that the burden of proof lies with he who asserts something. I’m not asserting anything. I’m simply asking for evidence of Christ as historical character, and none has been forthcoming. No big deal, really, since we all respect the literary character and that’s enough for me.

You seem to be lashing out rather than attempting to discuss, so I’ll conclude by telling you that I feel sorry for you also, and I’ll pray for you too.

Take Care,

LaMar

Monson assured Hoenecker that if the LDS church were allowed to build the Freiburg temple, the brethren would stop asking for travel permission for the Saints to go to places in the decadent west like Switzerland. He also assured Comrade Hoenecker that LDS people are naturally obedient and conditioned from an early age to follow orders, however ridiculous (something that is sadly true, I must admit). He also assured Hoenecker that the LDS church was committed to supporting the Communist authorities.

Steve Benson, grandson of LDS prophet Ezra Taft Benson, wrote a great article on all this. It can be found here:

i am quite familiar with steve bensons writings. I find his perspective very interesting and I agree with him on some points but I think both of you exaggerate the significance of this “relationship” between monson and honecker. I see it as a one shot deal where monson was being a typical LDS salesman trying to get a dealership (I mean temple 😃 ) built.

I’m sure part of my dislike is due to perspective. I grew up listening to this guy, Monson, and he certainly does put on a great show of being quite the principled humanitarian. I also grew up in the Reagan years. It’s hard for me to wrap my mind around without getting a rotten taste in my mouth. At the same time, I can see the pragmatic argument you’re making.

well I am a big Reagan fan and I was living in Germany when the wall came down so I can understand that. I also spent many years hearing all the little Tommy and the pigeons stories. Still though I like to try and keep things in perspective.

I have a buddy who is a Tridentine Catholic. You might want to argue with him.
well unless he’s a sedevacantist (which is a heretic like FLDS are to mormons) he would probably not see doctrine changed just practice.

Wow! No kidding.

Which part of Germany did you live in? You speak English pretty proficiently. Were you there as an American (in the military maybe?) or did you grow up there?

I’d love to talk to you about this, but I’m derailing the conversation (which is supposed to be about what, Mormonism or something? LOL!). If you have the inclination, feel free to send me a private message sometime.

AFAIK, the TCs don’t have any beef with doctrine; they are hung up about some current disciplines (practices) such as mass in the vernacular instead of Latin, not kneeling for communion, and stuff like that. They also don’t seem to like any ecumenical activities.

The big problem most people have is that they don’t understand the difference between doctrines and disciplines. The church never changes doctrines, but disciplines can and do change to help us live out our beliefs at a given moment in time.

Thanks for the clarification.

This guy is a neighbor of mine and has worked for me off and on. He’s tried to explain it to me over the years, and I’ll admit that I was interested only peripherally (I study Latin, but in my case it’s to read Ovid rather than anything that comes out of the Vatican).

Even so, it seemed similar to me at the time to the schism between the FLDS. Maybe I was reading too much into it.

uuuuuh My english is okay I guess. although I have a noticeable TEXAS accent.😃

I was in the military at the time. stationed in frankfurt, then mainz. went to berlin before and after the wall coming down. kinda neat. also got to go to france during their bicentennial and the 100th anniversary of the eiffel tower.

How do you know if the Mormon leader is in apostasy? My understanding (which may be flawed) is that current revelations can contradict past revelations, so you just have to take it on faith that the current prophet is on the up and up. However, if each prophet is protected somehow from teaching error, why couldn’t Jesus Christ Himself keep the first Church from allegedly apostasizing? I mean, Joseph Smith’s church is nearly 200 years old whereas Jesus couldn’t make it past 100? Please enlighten me.
Hi, Kids. Original Poster here. This thread was supposed to be about Mormonism, not whether or not the Pope is a Nazi. If you want to talk about that, start your own darn thread. Otherwise get back on topic or get off my thread!
