Audible audio books -- yes or no?

Has anyone tried / does anyone use the Audible.com audio book subscription service? Thumbs up or thumbs down? Specific complaints or kudos?
 
I used it for a while, as there was a series of long books I wanted to listen to on car trips. I used the service for about a year, and then cancelled, as it will take a lot more trips to get through these books (currently eight of them, about 45-55 hours each.)

I am very pleased with the quality of the recorded books, as the reader is wonderful. Some readers are better than others, I imagine.

There is a 30 day free trial period, I believe.
 
Lubricious is free, but their books tend to be older for that price. What is super-terrific is they have quite a few Xatholic books, several of which are GK Chesterton 😃
 
Audible is good. I only use audiobooks for long journeys, so I created an account and I buy individual books. Unless you are an avid audiobook “reader”, I think the subscription is expensive.

They have a “Deal of the Day” e-mail subscription that you can sign up for. Often you could get a good book for a few dollars, without a subscription. Another cool thing is Amazon Whispernet - you can buy the book for Amazon kindle and sync between the audiobook and the kindle copy of the book so you can read some and then listen to some.

Also, classic novels tend to be cheaper.
 
Audible is a very good service. I had to stop subscribing for money reasons, but I still have easy access to all the books I bought. They sometimes have free stuff like short stories or promotional stuff, and they used to have a really nice quality recording of St. John Paul II 's funeral Mass and other historic events, for free.

Also, they have that thing where, if you buy a book on Amazon (which bought Audible a few years back), you can get the audiobook for a cheap price, like $1.99. You don’t have to subscribe to get that.

The thing where you can get whole college-level courses for one Audible credit is a ridiculously good value. (You should listen to samples first.)

Also, if you pick a book or narrator you don’t like, you can return it and get another.

My bride gave me an Audible subscription for a couple of Christmases, when I was working a job which allowed me to listen during working hours, but I gave it up when I no longer had so much “listening time”.

I was very pleased with the product, and have plenty left to listen to. And I still check the Daily Deals and other offers (recently I briefly renewed my membership, when there was an ultra-cheap 3-month subscription offered)

Caveat: It can be kind of “addictive” – I made plenty of direct purchases, as well as the subscription credits. :hypno:

I loved it. I had a subscription for around 5 years or more. I like that I can still go up there and grab some of the books that I have archived under my name. Read some great books, and the subscription allows me to purchase books that I couldn’t afford otherwise. (some books are over $50).

I don’t subscribe now, because I’m trying to keep all expenses down to a minimum and I now have over 200 books to listen to, over and over again.
 
Thanks to all for the comments, which seem to be uniformly positive. I’ve been listening to borrowed volumes of a fantasy series (NOT Game of Thrones), but my source had only about half the volumes, and I was thinking of subscribing to finish the series, and then acquire and listen to other books/series. The trial period thru Amazon Prime is three months/three books. I can afford the subscription price.

I listen mainly when I’m driving or doing yard/house work. It helps to pass the time and keep my mind occupied.

I love it. I have audio books of classics like little women and Lord of the Rings. I also have ones for book series I have read. Sometimes it’s a good way to fall asleep.

It’s a tad pricey for one credit a month ($14.95) but sometimes the audio books I buy would be $20 otherwise.
 
Absolutely love it! I take transit to work and listen to audiobooks on my commutes. I find the selection wonderful - and for audiobooks, the pricing is excellent.

I know; the books that I would be getting are monsters – 40-50 hours. I don’t know what the purchase price would be.

Oh yes…I have a number of audiobooks in that range. For me the monthly subscription is well worth it.
