Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Since 2017 is the 100th Anniversary Year of Mary’s Apparitions to the 3 children at Fatima, this month of August traditionally dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, takes on added significance. It was during her third apparition that the children were given a vision of Hell, but before the vision Mary said:
Make sacrifices for sinners, and say often, especially while making a sacrifice: O Jesus, this is for love of Thee, for the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for offences committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary…

By God’s Grace, let us take time today, if we have not already begun to pray our Rosary daily as Mary requested, to pray the Rosary with attention and devotion, and let us offer little sacrifices with great love, and pray as Mary asked; let us ask Mary’s intercession for ourselves and for all those in most need of God’s Mercy.

Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us.
St. Jacinta and St. Francisco, pray for us.
St. Alphonsus Ligouri, whose Feast we celebrate today, pray for us.
Jesus, we trust in You!

Thank you. Also today begins, for the eastern Catholic Churches, the penitential period of fasting prior to the Great Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos that occurs on on August 15. (Feast of the Assumption.)

Yes, and as you say, today is the feast of St. Alphonsus Liguori. May all who are in need of consolation read this most extremely consoling and true book by a great Bishop and Doctor of the Church.

Here is a passage from it’s first chapter:

"Kings should, then, occupy themselves principally in works of mercy, but not so as to forget the just punishments that are to be inflicted on the guilty. It is, however, not thus with Mary, who, although a Queen, is not a queen of justice, intent on the punishment of the wicked, but a queen of mercy, intent only on commiserating and pardoning sinners. And this is the reason for which the Church requires that we should expressly call her “the Queen of Mercy.” The great Chancellor of Paris, John Gerson, in his commentary on the words of David, These two things have I heard, that power belongeth to God, and mercy to thee, O Lord (“Duo haec audivi; quia potestas Dei est, et tibi, Domine, misericordia.”—Ps. lxi. 12), says that the kingdom of God, consisting in justice and mercy, was divided by our Lord: the kingdom of justice he reserved for himself, and that of mercy he yielded to Mary, ordaining at the same time that all mercies that are dispensed to men should pass through the hands of Mary, and be disposed of by her at will. "

The “Hail Holy Queen” prayed by many of us after the praying of the Rosary, is a good example of how Mary is a Queen but also Mother of Mercy – She is the Mother of Jesus Who IS Mercy Incarnate. Mary is Mother of Him Who is our Life, our Sweetness and our Hope.

“O Jesus, living in Mary, come and live in your servants, in the spirit of holiness, in the fullness of your power, in the perfection of your ways, in the truth of your virtues, in the communion of your mysteries. Rule over every adverse power, in your Spirit, for the glory of the Father. Amen.” – Prayer of Father Jean Jacques Olier, S.S. (1608-1657)

Yes, amen, dear sister. She is truly our hope, by the grace of Jesus. Pope Paul VI called St. Maximilian Kolbe “clairvoyant” for his insights into Mariology. Kolbe says that Mary is in a sense the “personification of Divine Mercy”

Blessed Pope Pius IX wrote:

So could Mary will something differently than God? I.E. if we are enduring a certain test which seems it is not ending soon perhaps seen as God’s will. Could we as Mary’s intercession for it to cease or change in circumstance?

Dear goodguy,

Mary could never will something differently from God – as she is now eternally united with Him in Heaven. Even on earth as we hear in the Gospels, Mary followed the Will of God – as she was the “perfect disciple” of her Son who always did the will of the Father.

Mary intercedes for us now and at the hour of our death and her intercession with God is always the same as Jesus taught us in His perfect prayer: “Thy Will be done on earth as it is in heaven”.

“This is the will of God”, says St. Paul: “your sanctification” (cf 1 Thessalonians 4:3-8) i.e. God has created us for eternal happiness – in union with Him in the perfection of Charity. He permits difficulties in our lives in order that by His Grace we may grow in faith. You may want to read the Letter of James, chapter 1 verses 2-4 for comfort and strength to endure.

If you or someone you love is undergoing some trial or testing which is very difficult, it is good to ask Mary to intercede that you may persevere in faith, trusting God for the grace to endure and to accomplish His Will in the trial. She is our Mother whom Christ gave to us from His Cross. She knows what it is to suffer, and endure, and to accomplish God’s Will in her life.

The “Memorare” is a particularly efficacious prayer for all of us:
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me.Amen.

Dear Goodguy,

the Bible tells us to pray for each other. Moses interceded for the Israelites when they had been bad, and thus Moses turned away God’s wrath. This was God’s own will to show mercy because of Mose’s prayer… God has set Mary up so highly, as the Mother of God, that it’s impossible for a creature to be closer to God. He has decreed that nothing she asks for will ever be refused, and as the channel of His Infinite Mercy. That’s why at Cana he did not refuse her request. That’s why our Lady of Fatima asked for devotion to her Immaculate Heart, so that many souls that would otherwise go to Hell would be, instead, saved.

Pope Pius IX:

"Hence, it is the clear and unanimous opinion of the Fathers that the most glorious Virgin, for whom “he who is mighty has done great things,” was resplendent with such an abundance of heavenly gifts, with such a fullness of grace and with such innocence, that she is an unspeakable miracle of God — indeed, the crown of all miracles and truly the Mother of God; that she approaches as near to God himself as is possible for a created being; and that she is above all men and angels in glory…

Let all the children of the Catholic Church, who are so very dear to us, hear these words of ours. With a still more ardent zeal for piety, religion and love, let them continue to venerate, invoke and pray to the most Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, conceived without original sin. Let them fly with utter confidence to this most sweet Mother of mercy and grace in all dangers, difficulties, needs, doubts and fears. Under her guidance, under her patronage, under her kindness and protection, nothing is to be feared; nothing is hopeless. Because, while bearing toward us a truly motherly affection and having in her care the work of our salvation, she is solicitous about the whole human race. And since she has been appointed by God to be the Queen of heaven and earth, and is exalted above all the choirs of angels and saints, and even stands at the right hand of her only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, she presents our petitions in a most efficacious manner. What she asks, she obtains. Her pleas can never be unheard.
