Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Pius XII established this feast in 1954. But Mary’s queenship has roots in Scripture. At the Annunciation, Gabriel announced that Mary’s Son would receive the throne of David and rule forever. At the Visitation, Elizabeth calls Mary “mother of my Lord.” As in all the mysteries of Mary’s life, Mary is closely associated with Jesus: Her queenship is a share in Jesus’ kingship. We can also recall that in the Old Testament the mother of the king has great influence in court.
In the fourth century St. Ephrem (June 9) called Mary “Lady” and “Queen.” Later Church fathers and doctors continued to use the title. Hymns of the 11th to 13th centuries address Mary as queen: “Hail, Holy Queen,” “Hail, Queen of Heaven,” “Queen of Heaven.” The Dominican rosary and the Franciscan crown as well as numerous invocations in Mary’s litany celebrate her queenship.

The feast is a logical follow-up to the Assumption and is now celebrated on the octave day of that feast. In his 1954 encyclical To the Queen of Heaven, Pius XII points out that Mary deserves the title because she is Mother of God, because she is closely associated as the New Eve with Jesus’ redemptive work, because of her preeminent perfection and because of her intercessory power.

“Mother” is my favorite title for Mary, but I also pray often the short form of Total Consecration, to Jesus through Mary, which I learned from the writing of St. Louis de Montfort: "Mary, my Queen and my Mother, I am all yours. Keep me; Guard me as your property and possession. Just as I love and reverence God, so I love and honor Mary as His Mother. If God has so honored her, why would we not all want to honor her?

If anyone reading this thread has not read part any of St. Louis de Montfort’s classic treatise on True Devotion to Mary, I encourage you to read it. An online copy is HERE. I have read it many times, and each time, by God’s grace I learn more. If you have any questions about it, I’m always happy to help.
 
Keen! I just started reading it yesterday by happenstance. I’m still on the first chapter. It should be read slowly so it can be properly digested. Love it so far!

Thanks so much for your reply and for your reading of St. Louis De Montfort’s “True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary”. It was such a blessing to read that you “love it so far”!!!

Some who have begun to read it do not persevere and tell me the language is difficult for them, or that it simply did not impress them. I share with them the true stories of both St. John Paul II, and Servant of God Frank Duff, who founded the Legion of Mary and was a lay observer at Vatican II. Both of these men after reading “True Devotion”, consecrated themselves totally to Jesus through Mary and wrote that reading this book as young men was a “turning point in their lives”

Pope St. John Paul II took his Papal Motto, “Totus Tuus” (All Yours) directly from the words of St. Louis de Montfort. The most interesting part of their stories is that they read the little book more than once. I think Frank Duff said he had to read it 5 or 6 times before he was given the grace to “see” and then say: “This is true!”.

Like you, I think I loved it from my first reading. I continue to read it often and I will be renewing my Act of Consecration today with all the love and gratitiude my heart can offer to God for giving Mary to us as our Mother and Model. May we ever hear and do the Words Jesus said from His Cross: “Behold your Mother.”

My Queen and my MOther, I am all yours. Keep me, guard me as your property and possession!

Dear Dividus and Little Flower,

Thank you both for your replies and for your love of Jesus and Mary. For a long time now, it seems, I cannot think of the Son without thinking of the Mother nor the Mother without thinking of the Son and Father and Holy Spirit! What a gift we’ve been given in our Baptism to be children of God and of Mary!

Come Holy Spirit, overshadow us as you overshadowed Mary, that we may bring Jesus spiritually to all we meet.
Jesus, we trust in You!
Mary, my Queen and my Mother, pray for all our Father’s children whom He has given to you.
 
“Let the entire body of the faithful pour forth persevering prayer to the Mother of God and Mother of men. Let them implore that she who aided the beginnings of the Church by her prayers may now, exalted as she is in heaven above all the saints and angels, intercede with her Son in the fellowship of all the saints. May she do so until all the peoples of the human family, whether they are honored with the name of Christian or whether they still do not know their Savior, are happily gathered together in peace and harmony into the one People of God, for the glory of the Most Holy and Undivided Trinity” (Vatican II, Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, 69).

Dear LoveMercyGrace,

Thanks for this beautiful and powerful quote from the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church. I read sometime ago that the Bishops at Vatican II debated whether or not to have a separate document on Mary or to include her in the document on the Church. I truly believe the Holy Spirit inspired her inclusion in “Lumen Gentium” (Light to the Nations) as the Document on the Church is titled, for Mary is the icon of the Church, she is so intimately united to the Trinity in her loving obedience.
