AUGUST RUSH is the name of a character in the Oliver Twist-type movie of the same name. August Rush is a young boy who, as a baby, is given up for adoption without his unwed mother’s knowledge. He is autistic (not spelled out in the movie) and a savant. The movie suggests his mother, who was told the baby died, has a form of autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, having counted the exact number of days since his birth, Rain Man-type number crunching. Daddy is a talented Irish musician.
This film is a pro-life movie told in reverse. The child was inconvenient for the unwed mother’s family and shoulda coulda woulda been aborted in a perfect, convenient amoral world. He has a kind of disability that makes him loving yet dissociated from the “normal” world of cynical mistrust. We are brought to love the child then realize he was an abortion candidate.
August Rush is united with his parents in the end by their unexpressed love for each other as expressed in music. Love conquers all.
